Default HID Kit help please

I had a hid kit running successfully for 6 months, then a bulb went, i stupidly left the engine running when i was fiddling with the cables and there was sparks and the right handside bulb would no longer work, not even a standard bulb, I had to take it to a garage who replaced a blown fuse...

I've fitted the left handside hid kit fine and it works, but for some reason the righthandside doesn't work on HID, but works for a standard bulb, I've tried changing the known good bulb and ballast that works on the left handside to no avail... I've come to the conclusion that i need a new bit where the bulb plugs into as there is a bit of plastic missing on the side, that was cracked... so I think the standard bulb works fine as the metal pins are very rebust and make a connection, whereas the hid kit pins are a bit more flimsey and aren't making a good connection with the bulb housing.

To be clear I'm talking about the lead circled in GREEN as per pic...

Anyone have any sugguestions? or know where I can get a replacement lead circled in green?

As at the moment I have one HID light and another standard light, it looks crappy!

The set up I know of with HID's does not jive with what you are saying the way I read your post.

Could it be that the two wires that plug into the old bulb socket need reversing, I wired mine as per instructions included and they did not work. reversing these two wires in the socket worked.

If not, I thought that two separate wires plugged into the socket that formerly went to the back of the bulb and that these then went to the ballast, with two other wires returning to which the bulb is pre attached.

The female connectors inside that circled housing are common female spades.
Are you sure your NEG (-) connection is going to the lead with two (2) black wires?

Try swapping HID kit parts from left -to-right to see if you perhaps have a bad ballast/cable/bulb bad-from-the-box?

yup, tried the known good ballast and bulb but to no avail... I have copied exactly the same setup as the working side... but it works with standard bulb.... weird!

That's really strange, as it's normally the left that does not want to work, or so I hear.

I AM GUESSING THAT THE ABOVE IS LIKE YOUR KIT.
I WOULD SUGGEST THAT IF THEY ARE HOOKED UP THE SAME THAT BOTH WOULD WORK.
THE ORIGINAL SOCKET SHOULD BE TRIED PLUGED IN BOTH WAYS.

I HAD TO REPLACE ONE BALLAST RECENTLY BECAUSE IT
SHORTED.

HOPE THIS HELPS IN ANYWAY.

thanks guys, I am planning to have a "fiddle" tomorrow (weather permitting) If I can't get it going I'll take some pics, and hopefully we might be able to get to the bottom of it!

You didn't mention if you used a meter to verify hot and ground leads. I have been SO happy with the HID lights, I put another set in for my brights yesterday. For the brights, each lead is a single wire, the same shade of black. I used the meter and marked the hot lead (with pink fingernail polish - my wife's, really).

Normal bulbs can run fine "backwards," but the HID's are a different animal.

One of my brights worked with no fiddling; the other did not. It turned out that the connector at the ballast caught one metal prong (inside the socket on the ballast), but the other spread to the side. I had to carefully bend it back into shape, and then it worked as it should. I suspect I'm not the only one to find that problem.

Good luck!

I understand that HID's are not recommended for brights, because of the warmup delay? Generally, when you want your brights, you want them right away?

I appreciate the feedback on the brights, and considered this before I decided to try it. At worst, it's easily reversible, and I'll have a set of spares, since our cars use the same lamps for low and bright.

My experience so far with the dims, is that the time to "on" would be measured in miliseconds. The concern with the brights coming on instantaneously is not really very logical, at least from my perspective. I do need them to go OFF immediately when I meet another vehicle; this isn't a problem. I live in a very rural area (most of Mississippi), and the deer population may exceed the human population. I need as much light as I can safely have.

It may be that the HID lights can't take a lot of on/off cycling. I'll report back, good or bad, once I've had some time to form an opinion, or to see a failure.

I do have four good H7 lamps in the trunk, just in case.

Thanks for advice guys, turns out it was a bad ballast, Fitted the new one and it all works fine, although it was a nightmare trying to fit the clips, but eventually got there!

This option was covered in post #5 we thought.

glad you got it working. I have had the HID's in for four years. In the first year, I replaced both ballasts but haven't had any trouble since. The ballasts that didn't last where Chrome with no stickers and a one piece mount. The ones that I have had no trouble with where a little thinner, had a black and yellow sticker and a mount that you put together like an old erector set.

I mentioned replacing my brights with the same kits about three months ago. I have finally had a chance to use them some, and am very pleased. There is no issue with "instant on." Since you don't lose dim when the brights are turned on, any delay is masked. I don't know what effect a constant on-off-on cycle would have on life of the lamps, but I don't use them that way.

The improvement was not as drastic as with the dims; I guess the first set made the difference between dark and light, these took me from light to more light.

Posted here because that's where I mentioned it first, and in case there is still interest. I will post a stand-alone note once I have enough time on the lights.
