How badly did I just get ripped off?
How badly did I just get ripped off?
I had to leave my 2004 Crossfire at a Chrysler dealer to get a crankshaft sensor replaced and they are charging me $305 and tax is extra. It as supposed to be $215 and tax but they said the price for the sensor was listed incorrectly.
I get the feeling this is a lot but I'm not very mechanical so I don't have much option.
Thanks.

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
Sounds about right for a rip off at the dealership. I replaced mine last week - the original mercedes part made by BOSCH in Germany was $45 online. The dealership was going to charge me $154 for the part. It's a very simple replacement. The part is only held in by 1 bolt and another bolt to get to it. Took me 15 minutes to replace the thing.
I know they probably charge you for the part, service fee + a full hour of labor and diagnostics. RIP OFF! Very sad they do **** like that, but I guess everybody has to make money somehow!

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
Why can't someone create a dealership that doesn't do this to it's customers. Seriously I don't mind them making money off me, but I don't want to have to morgage a home to repair a car.
I mean I'm all for a capitalist economy, but one would think that if you can offer a good service for a fair price you'd thrive.

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
I guess someone who actually works at a dealership could explain te facts here. As it appears, not really a rip off but standard charges. Labor hours at thedealership are $70-$80 an hour to payfor union techs.
These guys are certified and hence have an invested cost.
The dealership must carry an overhead and their purpose is to make a profit. That you can buy at wholesale, same as them, is a lucky bonus for those who can take care of it themselves.
A ripoff is when the "techs" scratch their head, guess and let you pay for their misdiagnosis. So along with theCPS you bought a fuel pump and injectors and had a tune before somebody said , "why don't jaul stick an new Crank sensor and see what flies? Cain't herdjah"
So, at the cashier you pay out $1,200 or more for a CPS. That'd be a ripoff.
But this doesn't sound like one. Pretty fair dinkim for having someone else do the job.

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
Just an interesting side note as I read thiis thread. The price per hour for body work amd mechanical repair were the same in the 60/70s but since then the insurance companies have set the prices for body repair through insurance pressure and in most cases what they will pay for parts, etc.
However, this is NOT the case with mechanical repair. It is interesting that some places will NOT take a mechanical repair job on if it means having to accept insurance fees. It is too low for them and they have other more proftable work. Ask your dealer what the car companies pay per hour for warranty work verus the walk in.
In general, the price per hour today is $50/60 body work and $100/120 for mechanical work. Also the body shops do NOT get to mark up their parts because the insurance companies are paying the bills. This is one of the reasons Xfires get totaled. It is cheaper for the insurance companies.
Just a thoight if it worked for body work maybe it can work for medical fees. Please that was NOT a political statement just a thought. So please there is no need to turn on the blow torches.

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
Well, I look at this way...the part is in the $45 range, but if you have no idea how to replace it, it could cost you a lot more if you screw up. Someone had to diagnose the problem, so, who did that? You pay for standard time...diagnosis, labor to fix, plus the part...it is a fair price if you can't do it... But, with all the info on here, and the help available, I think crank, and cam sensor can be done by about anyone. and save yourself a lot of money...oil changes are another example...so, rip off, not really...the prices are on their board in the service area...and they do perform the service. It's when they are trying to diagnose something, and start throwing parts at it in order to try and fix the problem, that I don't like...if you don't know, then I shouldn't pay for all the quessing hours performed, just the hours that accomplished something...but, that is how they are run, with all the overhead and such...

I don't often disagree with Franc, but I might this time, a little anyway. I can't see $315 for this repair, but I could see an hour labor charge (around $90 to $110) and $100 for the part. As Franc stated, these shops have overhead, and I have yet to see anyone report to work and NOT expect to get paid.
My perspective: I work on radios, phones and computer networks in 911 centers. Our labor rates are $90 per hour. We mark up parts 40% to 55% (unless it's a real cheap part, say a $1 or so... then we mark them up 500%). Again, $200 seems fair but $315 just seems a bit high to me.
Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
1963 I was working at a Washington DC Chevy dealership. Mechanical work was $6 per hr customer pay; $4.50 warranty work. Mechanics were paid 50% on book hours.

Re: How badly did I just get ripped off?
I have to say, I was not mechanically inclined until recently when I became a member of this forum. Since, I have saved hundreds of dollars and gained so much knowledge and confidence with my car. I have replaced the alternator, the hood arm, the EGR valve, and installed the revised Crossfire emblems, and headlight tint. I was able to do all of these things with the help of the people on this forum. There are great illustrations and directions to doing just about any job.
Thanks again guys for all your help!! Now can someone please tell me what size hose that is attached to the solenoid (EGR valve)??
Sarina

In 1963 I made $0.55 and hour picking tomatoes and thought I was rich. Two years later I made $2.04 an hour and knew I was.
Spent lots of it on Cars, beer and girlfriends. The rest, I just wasted.

Do you also complain about the cost of your steak dinner when you are at the restaurnt? I am sure you could have bought the same steak at the store for much cheaper.
