I think what you meant to say was 'The black-painted Styrofoam under the carpet in the hatch is in the rear energy-absorbing area'.
That Styrofoam would not save anyones life unless they were in danger of drowning.

More of a generation thing and not a new yorker thing. Kids today don't know how to write.

Honestly... Reading what this guy writes is very painful. I just can't understand what he is saying.

Nope, the styrofoam _is_ part of the energy-absorption (as is the sheetmetal). Just look at modern cars on the road with damaged (ripped open) rear "bumpers" -- the bumpers are vinyl/plastic over styrofoam. Don't make 'em like they used to!

HTML Code:

I have to agree. Mine is in the shop now from being rear ended - hard. The styrofoam absorbs a lot, and even so I have trunk floor damage. But if it were all metal, the damage would've been much worse because the initial impact would have transferred right through the sheet metal to the deck lid and quarter panels. I believe that without the absorption capabilities of the styrofoam, my car would have been a write off.

The Styrofoam under the bumper is part of the 5mph bumper rule, which is a joke anyway. When that trunk area starts crumpling up the Styrofoam in the wells is not going to do much good. The force required to crumple that steel is considerable, a couple of hundred coffee cups is useless. Those foam parts are just as liable to pop out anyway as they are exposed on the top face and have cavities in them.
That's my take on the setup anyway.

Idiot's.. I had a guy years back plow into the back of my pick-up. He got out and ran from the scene. I took off chasing him and after awhile I finally caught him. Gasping for air, I brought him back to the chase scene by his neck. His insurance company paid for the damages. This idiot had me in court twice for over reacting and being abusive. Damn! Was finally throwed out thank goodness. Squirrel Crusher
