Who uses a radar detector in their car???
Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
Bel 965. Second Bel - first one lasted over 5 years. It has saved my bacon (sorry for the near-pig pun) numerous times since I tend to drive I96 at 75-100+. You just have to catch the first weak beep and slow down fast. Typical warnings on straightways are over 1/2 mile.
I read the tests between the V1 and the others and while the V1 did come out best - and most expensive - the difference was minimal. And I really don't need to know in which direction the radar is....I just need the earliest warning possible.

Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
I've been using various forms of Escort radar detectors since the mid 80's. They have been in two vettes, a porsche, 4 bemmers and my pickup truck, now in the crossfire. Haven't had a ticket since, The one thing I will say is we don't see a lot of laser radar in our area. I have certain roads that I do my speed runs on, I go one way and check for radar, turn aroung and have fun. Preperation is the key and you know the condtion of the road.
Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
I have a cheepy radar detector. It works on occasion.
The best way for me to get out of a ticket though is to just mention either my grandfather (was a sargeant in my town) or my cousin (cheif of the fire dept in my town).
if it's an out of state cop I'll tell him that I absolutely in no way was doing 115mph because my fith and six gear synchro's are shot and I cannot get into the gears. Only did that once, and felt horrible because I actually lightly grinded 5th and 6th to prove it. Got me out of a wicked ticket, tho!

Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
I am leaning towards the BEL STI Driver. I will purchase in a couple of weeks as I am making a multi-state trip in June. The STI Driver and Valentine One are the same price and coverage. The BEL says it is not detectable by ANY of the detector detectors and Valentine says 75% not detectable for some of them. Plus the BEL unit can add a laser jammer if you want. I want the portability of this size unit since I have multiple cars I can use it in.

Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
Does anyone know if the Escort zr3 laser jammer will work with a Bel rx65? I don't mean work independently but can it be linked by a cord to work as one unit? I have done some reading and I know the zr3 will link with an Escort 8500 but since Escort and Beltronics are one and the same company I was wondering if I can link the zr3 to a Bel rx65. Why not just buy the Escort 8500......well I kind of like the digital voice feature of the Bel rx65. I hope somebody can answer this question.

Just remember that while we might be "pigs"...you pay our salary! (Thanks)
But back to the topic, I only site for 11MPH over the limit or greater. You are correct, however. I cannot tell between a safe speeder and a non-safe one. The law says you are speeding, and our crime code has no statute for "safe speeding", only "speeding".
But anyway...I've written tickets to people with RADAR detectors. Even the best ones only work in ideal situations. If I'm sitting behind a bridge abutment, shooting traffic as it passes by me, your RADAR detector simply tells you that I just clocked you, and by that time, it's too late.

Re: Who uses a radar detector in their car???
Here in PA, 30+ and over is considered "reckless driving" and is an automatic loss of driver's license.
I've never written one 30+ over. I've written hundreds of 28's and 29's.
It's easier for everyone involved to just write a huge ticket and fine than to take away someone's source to be a useful part of society. Without a driver's license, they lose their job. Without a job, they lose their home. Without a job and a home, I have to go round them up for being a dead-beat or a criminal.
With just a fine, they pay it, learn their lesson, and keep on being productive.
And they always thank me.
