While he never actually said that "the dealer that changed the oil last didn't change the oil rings", he came to that conclusion when I told him that's what it sounded like. He thought they weren't changed the last time an oil change was done because the ones that were in were flattened and looked too old.

As for the proof he gave me, while I would love to stand there and watch them do it, I have classes and work to go to. I don't think he would have been as happy if I was standing over his shoulder the entire time too. The proof, you could say, is that there is no longer oil all over the front of my engine, the belt is back on and appears clean and tight (yes, I touched it to check- all of it), and the filter no longer has a slow leak. That's all the proof I really need right now. If something goes wrong because of their work, then I have the WO print out I can refer Chrysler to when I call to complain. I would expect some free things in that case.

Glad your back on the road again. Sounds like you'll be doing your own oil changes and other maintenance from now on. What year and mileage do you have on the car?

Next time you get an oil change - ask them to save the old filter, o-rings and crush washer for your inspection prior to paying the bill.

I, for sure, will. It's nearing the three year mark on the warranty and I have just under 35,000 miles on it right now. Time for the warranty to expire. I'm getting things arranged to buy an extended warranty from Michael Case's dealer, so the big things don't slap my car out of commission. As for the routine maintenance, this is the last time Chrysler will lay a hand on the car.

I always get the RO print outs and anything else they will give me, just in case something like this happens. As for warranty work, they usually won't give you the parts since it's warranty. Either way, I doubt they will ever be doing an oil change again, so I doubt I'll have to worry about even asking for this stuff. I'll keep that in mind in case they do someday though, it's a good idea.

Exact same thing happened to me. Fortunately I was pulling right into my destination when my ps went out. I changed the oil the day before, made sure there was no leaks, but I guess the filter just wasn't tight enough. Cleaned it up and put it back on, twisted that sucker tight and all good.

I don't see how the dealer decided they just weren't going to replace the o-rings, much less do the oil change right. I just did mine for the first time and must have sat there for a good 45 mins while the black sediment and sludge dripped out of the crankcase.

Good thing is the engine is seemingly running much smoother now after I did the oil change myself. Now to fix the brake system. The pads, fluid, and rotors are on their way, I just got to order the SS lines.
