So this argument can stay here untill they do a good job on my engine.
Then I can ask probing and possibly insulting questions.
Right now the mechanic says a valve droppped, the adjuster says several valves bent. I saw one valve stem slighly curved and no damage to any pistons. Until they button it up and it runs right, I'm not getting involved in the descrepancy

Re: Bad Day in Nashville, TN.
The shop called today. Seems we have it back together with all the parts accountd for.
Top end overhaul, all new valves and seats, camshaft and all new gaskets and seals.
But, Now two cylinders have no compression and although it runs, they tell me it runs rough. (no Kiddin')
So................,
They are going to replace, get this, the fuel pump.
I feel so much better now.
Perhaps I need a second opinion?

Re: Bad Day in Nashville, TN.
Franc,
Does not sound good at all. Might want to ask them how the fuel pump has anything to do with the lack of compression as that's a new one for me. I hope the insurance company is paying for this and not that it's coming out of your own pocket. Wish you the best of luck and if you need anything, you have my number.
Take care my friend.

Originaly it was one bad cylinder, then it was two. then it was three.
Perhaps we are gainin' on it.
Despite the electronic controls, most engines today are as simple mechanicaly as they were thirty years ago. Compression is a mechanical action the result of valves closing properly as the piston moves up to the head. I cannot fathom how this could be failing given all new valves, cams, and rebuilt heads.
The pistons all moved properly with the head off.
Oh well. They got paid off their estimate plus a little fudge factor so it is on them to get it running. we shall see.
Meanwhile Subeman,s Coupe is looking rather tempting.

Re: Bad Day in Nashville, TN.
A fuel pump wont cause compression issues.
Your problem is either rings, due to matieral from the valve wall scratching the cylinder walls, headgasket issue, head bolts not properly torqued, mechanical timing, etc.
Sounds like your dealer is just trying to pad the bill and make extra money at this point

Re: Bad Day in Nashville, TN.
I've been reading along and hoping for the best like most of us. I think it's almost time to insist on a new motor. After all that time, work and money (even if it's not your money, well it is, you've been paying insurance for what, 35 years?) and the motor has bad cylinders, I mean low compression, I'd be real careful before signing off on the work. I think you'd be advised to have the work checked by a mechanic of your choice. Dang it all, I'm not feeling good about this. Sorry Franc, I think the repairs now qualify as scary questionable. Be careful and protect your cars future.

Scary confidence at best.
And Yes, Yes Yes. I miss my shifter.
I got to drive Judi's new white roadster 6 spd the other day for a few miles. It was like that first sip of cold beer on a hot day.
