I purchased the 2005 Crossfire last Monday and have finally had the chance to clean it up.
Here are a couple pictures. Oh the car is beginning to grow on me by the way

I also opted for a 36,000 mile 3 year bumper to bumper warranty for an added $2500 dollars.
This includes towing, car rental, etc.
Does this added investment sound worthwhile to you guys.
The fine print stated that warranty is void with out proof of 5,000 mile (6 month) oil changes and replacement of the timing belt at 60,000 miles. No power adders can me installed of course aswell.
The car rolled off the lot with 45,XXX miles.

Yes, it was a third party warranty. $25 dollar Deductible

 

that has to be the first time i have ever seen some one use the cup holder.. i have never use mines: maybe i fear it may not close back

You kind of got screwed on the warranty. When my bumper to bumper expired at 36K miles I bought the max care with 50 dollar deductible through Chrysler. 6 year 85K miles. I paid 1,200 in 12 monthly installments of $100 per month for a year.

 

Alright haha, Maybe instead of hammering me on the high price it sounds like a paid for this policy compared to others out there you could answer this question. Do you believe that over the period of 36,000 miles that these cars require the $2500 amount of repairs/headache?

What prompted me to purchase the policy was the fact that parts supply are some what limited (increased time spent in the shop) this is where I thought the rental car could come in handy. The limited availability of parts also makes them expensive, and dealership labor rates have never been what you call affordable.
Covered towing and roadside maintenance also sounded like a plus considering that all we have is a can of fix a flat.

 

Yes I do, but not in things that are going to be covered. You will spend the $2500 on tires and oil changes alone (if you drive the car the way it was meant to be driven) and it is a mercedes, it should be pretty worry free, as we have seen here, until well over 100K miles. I would not have bought the warranty, but that is just me.....

 

No you will not spend that much money !!!!! Thats why I never buy extended warranties !!! Go with what they give yuh & when its over its over !!!! Why pay for something that might happen ???????? Just me but I never get the extended warranty on any product !!! They are hope you buy it more money in their pocket !!!! Would they sell them if they think they are going to lose !!!!!!!! NO !!!!

 

Congrats on the new ride, not sure on the "warranty" though. You may be right about some aspects of the coverage, as to down time, others may have to comment about that. Good luck and watch out for the "Perm-a-Grin"

 

Right before my car hit 36k miles, I bought an unlimited, lifetime bumper to bumper warranty with $100 deductible through Chrysler directly for $3000, interest free. I pay $80 for 3 years. I found it on their website.

It covers me with towing, lodging, rental car, and food if I'm more than 100 miles away, too.

 

I dissagree with everyone here that says the warranty is not needed. On this car it is very much needed. I had my car longer than most (5 years owning it and bought new in 2005) so I have seen all the typical problems. Thank God I had some type of coverage. I just doubled by money with what I paid for extended coverage Vs. what I have already fixed with free rentals. And I still have a year left to go.

Don't get me wrong... this car is solid. When I drove it everyday for years little problems would come up. Now that I only drive the car on weekends it has been more problem free (maybe because I worked out all the kinks). But when something stupid breaks it could easily cost you $800 dollars. I have been down that road many of times and I am happy I never had to pay out of pocket.

My only issue is that I think most people here paid way too much for their extended warranties.

 

Congrats on the ride and welcome to the forum. I have about 4 months left on my 7/70 warranty. I am glad i had it. Discounting the start up TSBs the vast majority of these cars were essentially maintenance free. But those poor few guys that got tagged, got tagged really hard. If you turn out to be one of those guys you'll be glad you have the warranty. You might have paid a bit much for it but if you ever have to use it, you'll be glad you had it.

 

The title of this thread could not be more appropriate given the direction it has gone. Lets face it the first bath most new crossfire owners took would have been paying anything close to MSRP. A couple of thousand dollars for a warranty is hardly a loss next to the "drop like a rock" resale value of the X-fires.. you have purchased a great car enjoy it and know that the first bath involved the car and not you

 

Well I disagree. I paid MRSP and giggled all the way home. If you think the car gets looks now, you shoulda been here 6 years ago. I had people walk off the curb to stand in front of me and stare. I parked it way out in the boonies at a shopping mall and found a crowd of 20 people standing around it when I came back out. My car has depreciated about 4K/yr. Just about the same as a 350Z. Seems reasonable to me.

 

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! There are very few original owners around here. Most of the people here are new owners and paid peanuts for their crossfires. I was one of the original owners that bought new in 2005 and paid 25K for a base coupe. A great deal for the time (when the economy was great and cars were flowing off the lot). I had trouble buying a 350Z new for 28K... I am guessing if I bought a 2005 Z back then it would have the same resale value as my crossfire today.

As for the stops and stares... .I got them every day when the car was new. I had people yelling at me with their thumbs up in the air. I had people walk over to my car at the gas station while filling up. Everyone wanted a tour of the interior and they were facinated. My neighbor walked around the car staring at it saying "dam... holy crap". That car got more attention then anything I owned. Now it has died down a bit but I am sure in about 10 years they will become even more rare and generate the same attention I got when it was new. Nobody knew what it was 5 years ago and a lot of people today still don't know. That car was worth every penny of the 25K I spent back then. I don't regret it. Owning that car has been a great ride! People here that bought their car used for 10K in the past 6 months will never understand what it was like to buy it new in 2005.

 

I bought a Chrylser warranty on my roadster (max 7/60, $100 ded for $1445) because I was concerned about the soft top and all the cables. Now at 35k and going on summer 6. What a waste. My only problem is a TPMS alert and I'm not going to pay $100 to fix that. I may have them look into the rough 1-2 shift before the warranty expires, but I think I'm more scared of them ripping into the tranny than just living with it. I passed on the warranty on my SRT6, My vote is if the car is in excellent shape, put the money in the bank in case of repairs. PS - You wreck the car, you're out all that warranty money.

 

I agree the car feels very solidly built and I do like the Mercedes engineering even if it is "outdated." The coverage I have is through Olympicare. The salesmen broke out their formulary book for me. It is simply based on reliability, ease of obtaining parts, parts price, and labor costs/duration. They then score each car on a scale. A score of 5 is said to be the break even number as far as the $2500 dollars is considered. For example I looked up a Toyota Corolla which scored as 3. The Crossfire scored a 15!. Just to make sure this was not just some stupid marketing ploy, I then looked up the ratings for a 2000 Mercedes Slk 320. The MB ranked a 17. I am assuming a bit higher because of the power retractable top. Either way it was still with in the same ballpark, reassuring me that there was some method to the scoring process.
