Interesting situations and stories about un/wanted attention.

I have an '06 coupe which have owned for two years. In that time I have had several comments from univited bystanders about what Jeremy Clarkson thought of the car, which annoys me because he offers a personal (often inaccurate) sensationalist opinion which then impacts the sales of cars in the UK. He does these brutal critiques of certain cars just to get a cheap joke or sound bite into his questionable tv programme.

Over two years I have had quite a few admiring glances and recently I was parked up and sitting in the car and two teenagers walked past, one said to the other "that's one of those Chinese sports cars" (!) - I would love to know which Chinese sports car!

A tough skin and a belief in the xfire is needed, but remember the feel of driving an unusual and (in my opinion) beautiful car means something.

enjoy....

regards

Russell

I had some douchebag tonight in a v6 eclipse start talking ****, like oh.. its just a crossfire.
they werent talking to me at this point, but then they start trying to talk to me.

So we get on the highway and they start pulling up, slowing down, etc. so I basically did a 60-whatever roll. little eclipse got bent over and raped like a bad prison scene.. they immediately got off the highway.

Then I had some redneck/rapper wannabe in a beat up blazer on 20s try to race me leaving a red light... twice.

Sorry, out of interest ,I see alot of guys "rebadge" their cars with Merc emblems. Does this not just say "almost a Merc".I'm proud of the fact of what it is.Its rare and unique,I don't want it to be anything else. Here in South Africa Chryslers have a sort of exotic air about them. Do the guys rebadge them because of a negative thing in the States? I see alot of rebadge merchandise?!

I've never had any of the experiences you guys are talking about in my 6 months & 11K miles of ownership. I drive my X-Fire daily and aside from a couple of close friends who've liked my car, I've never had any strangers even give it a second look, much less say anything to me about it.

What am I doing wrong?!

I was in one of the local tire shops getting the Xfire's state inspection completed yesterday, as I was backing the car out of the garage the shop owner (could have easuly passed as a ZZ top member) signals for me to roll down the window only so that he can remind me "the price on them tires are higher than giraffe Pu**y come this winter boy"

Drive it more and leave the windows open when driving around town. You'll get some type of reaction sooner or later. I've had my car for a year longer than you and the comments didn't come immediately. It was just a function of taking the car to different places and the luck of the draw. I also drive mine on a daily basis.

Modify it.

I drive my parents stock limited roadster and have gotten a few comments in 30K miles of driving it.

I drive my heavily modded coupe and it gets fairly annoying how many people want to talk about it. At a car show is one thing, but when I am trying to get to work is another

Just today we were outside at the dealership I work at moving cars around on the lot when I happen to look over to see a red roadster parked right next to my black coupe and a guy walking around them taking pictures. I walked over to ask if he (and his friend in the driver seat of the red roadster) were from the forums. He said no but asked for my card and directions to route 81 here in town.

Not an uncomfortable moment but I don't think admiration of my car will get old any time soon.

When someone verbally accosts you in your car, then you might change your tune!

I frequently get comments when I drive my VW as well and I have never felt uncomfortable in the 10 years I have owned that car. A good friend of mine keeps insisting that it looks like a porsche. There are certainly worse cars one could compare it with. The crossfire also gets similar comments and reactions. Just yesterday, I saw a teenage boy completely eyeball the car as his mom drove past. That was cool. The other side of the coin is when people have an almost emotional response to the car. People don't have emotional reactions to my VW. People have emotional reactions to exotic cars however---and that's kind of what it feels like sometimes owning the crossfire.

Mechanically, my car is as stock as it was when it drove off the line, but visually, it's been tweaked at bit, FWIW.

It's the old "Women are from Venus, men are from Mars" thing again. They express themselves differently, that's all. They do mean it as a compliment. I once got "It's absolutely darling!" If she's hot, she can call it anything she wants

Sorry to say it, but a bone stock SSB car is 'cute' and I think it looks a little on the girly side.

I am not trying to knock it or start the color wars, but when I see SSB automatic XFs it def makes me think Miata for some reason....

Last weekend I passed a 5 series BMW on the way home. Not "Playing sportscar" or anything. When I got around him, I got a mirror full of high beams, repeatedly, then he left them on. He must have thought I had mine on, though I almost never use them. Too much traffic when I'm usually on the road.

I let it go, but when I turned off the highway onto the two lane, he does it again. It took several tries, but he finally pissed me off, so I pulled over, let him by, and then showed him what my high beams actually looked like...just once for a couple of seconds. Now he's nervous, and I followed him a short way (unintentionally) Turns out we both live in the same subdivision. He lives across the street. I have never seen him outside of his house

Safety disclaimer: It was stupid of me to do what I did, and I would not recommend it or do it again, justified or not. Too easy for things to get out of hand these days. You never know who is in the other car or what they might do.
