Default Dealer oil change questions

Well its getting about that time for an oil change on the coupe, so I decided to give a few local dealers a call.

I talked to a few service departments, and remembering that the manual calls for mobil 1 0w40, I asked them if they carry it.

Both dealers told me, they do not carry it anymore, and that it really doesn't matter. Rather they carry their own "special blend".

Now, I've also called up a few indie shops, and they all close too early, and the schedule just doesn't work.

So I'm pretty much stuck with a dealer or figuring out how to do it on my own (not really interested in that).

Anyhow, my question is simple
Will I be fine with whatever blend Chrysler carries?
and does it really matter?

thanks,

Brian

If you dont want to do it yourself... go buy the Mobil 1 at the parts store and a Napa (Mann) filter and take it to one of the local Jiffy lubes or Oil Can Henry and have them change it for you.....

Yes, it makes a difference... the dealer just wants to use his cheap stuff and charge you the mark-up. If they can't bother to use the proper oil, they are likely using a cheap paper filter and dont really care about what kind of job they do.... stay away!!

Honestly I do not take my car to chrysler for anything. i go to my local mercedes dealer and they are more than helpful. I've even talked to service about the car, since it is 100% unchanged mercedes drivetrain.

Take it to your mercedes dealer, they'll do it right the first time. Every merc dealer I've been to has been nice and helpful, not to mention knowledgeable. You can talk to them about the car without having to dumb things down for chrysler to understand

I got the bait and switch pricing from the last Chrysler dealer that I went to. They quoted me $105, but charged me $130 (Centennial Chrysler - Englewood, CO). As MikeR pointed out, go buy the oil and filter yourself and go to a Jiffy Lube type of place. Most of them will still charge you $20-$30 for the change, but in the end you will still have money and you know that you have the right oil in your car.

Ok well I just got back from Schucks (O'reileys), and noticed they had the 0W40 on sale.

Now, my question is the drain plug gasket?
I was talking to a friend, and he told me I'd need one, yet schucks and autozone doesn't have them in stock.

Do I need one?
Isn't the old one still usable?
or should it be replaced when changing the oil.

thanks,

If the filter kit came with orings, there should be an extra one in the kit for the lug iirc, although ive never changed it and havent had an issue

The drain plug uses a copper ring. They are very inexpensive (just a few cents). They probably can be reused if done carefully and not over tightened previously. If not done right they could leave you with an oil leak.

The filter only comes with O rings for the oil filter... the drain plug uses a copper washer...... that you can get from the MB dealer too...I think only a couple of bucks..... I do mine from the top so dont know the PN or cost....

Just take the drain plug and washer to your local auto parts store and have them match one from their bins of washers. I ended up with a nylon washer since my Napa didn't have a copper one and mine was missing from the previous owner; the nylon one works fine.

The Crossfire is one of the easiest oil changes I've ever done. The hardest parts are removing the engine skid plate, and making sure the oil filter O-rings are in the correct positions, especially the big one. Take note of their exact positions on the filter assembly when you first remove it from the engine. Pour the 8 quarts of new oil right into the filter hole before reinstalling the filter assembly.

I leave my drain pan off, serves no purpose really.
Plus as much as I work on the car I get tired of taking it off and putting it back on. Plus when you drop something in the pan you have to pull it off anyways, its much simpler when the bolt just hits the ground

I've found a better solution

The local Mercedes dealer (Phil Smart), is offering a special on oil changes, $95.99 w 8 quarts 0w40, filter etc, free car wash (woo!) and a free 27 point inspection.

Probably just going to go take that .

Thanks though guys

I do not know why these Chrysler dealers are trying to feed this BS to us about the Mobil 1 oil ???? just bought a 2010 Dodge P/C Challenger SRT8, and it was filled from the factory with Mobil 1 and even states use Mobil 1 right on their 6.1 HEMI oil fill cap ! So yes the dealers are full of it, they ARE saving money and still charging the big $$$$$$$$ I would like to ask the service manager this question, if the factory is still using this oil in 2010, how can you say its discontinued ? I do change my own oil and have never had a problem yet getting Mobil 1

From what I understand Mobil 1 did stop producing 0w40, so what you see now is whats left, chrysler and mercedes have already started phasing in a new oil to replace the 0w40 iirc

I got mine at Autozone - 3 for something like $1.89 - somewhere here on this forum is the AUtozone part number, can't remember where I found it, but it's here, on this forum.

Do some searches here, I believe it's Mobile 1 5W40 synthetic (or was it 5W30?) I am not worried about it, since I have 5,000 miles to go and at the rate I'm going, it'll be 2012 before my next change.

Here is a thread for you to look at:

I'm still finding Mobil1 0W-40 at Autozone for almost $8/qt, so stocking up is expensive. Decided to rely on google and found this on the Mobil1 website....

Is Mobil 1 0W-40 Being Discontinued?

Question: Is Mobil 1 0W-40 Being Discontinued?I am an engineer for a major UAV company that has specified your Mobil 1 0W-40 oil for our aircraft. I read on a forum that the 0W-40 is going to be discontinued and replaced with 5W-40. Is this information correct?-- Tim Wright, San Diego, CAAnswer: No, Mobil 1 0W-40 will continue being part of our offer.
