Re: extended warranties
I purchased a Chrysler extended warranty on my roadster which I purchased new, and I have not used it in 5 years. Last summer I had a problem with my SRT6 and contacted 2-3 companies for extended warranties. They ranged from $1000-1500. A lot of companies resell warranties. There were multiple coverage plans (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) with different price tags and it seemed that in most cases maintenance work was not included. You might be better off putting the money in the bank and saving it for future repairs. The only reason I could justify that kind of money is to insure my SRT6 against supercharger failure, which could cost $4-6k to repair. I decided to gamble, treat them right (I don't race and have not modded my rides), and keep my fingers crossed. As a last data point, in most cases Consumer Reports recommends against extended warranties. PS -- My local indie shop (who works on my Audi) fixed my SRT6 problem for $130. Anyway, the preceding was my opinion and my decision, but you have to make up your own mind about how much risk you can afford to eliminate, and caveat emptor.
