Have had the same poping sound a couple three times now, sounds like it is comming from the support ( fuel cell ? ) behind the seat. It sounds like the fuel tank is expanding / contracting from vapor build up. I hear my lawn mower gas cans making the same noise from time to time.

Yep, that's the noise. Knock on wood, mine hasn't done it in awhile and I've never mentioned it to the dealer... they'd be scratching their rear end from now till forever....

Try a different brand fuel?

I have been hearing this noise also. I am now seeing the fuel light come on after I come to a stop and hear that knock. any new advice?

Well you seemed to have resurrected an old thread. I too have this noise. After reading this thread, my guess since there is so many of us that have this noise and even some SLK owners chimed in, but there is no adverse effects, that it's possibly a relief valve of some sort. I always thought it could be the fuel pump, based on where the noise is coming from, but it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

It even could be just one of the car's many hidden gadgets working, sort of like the blower (or whatever it is) that comes on when you first start the car up, especially on cold days. That supposedly has something to do with the catalytic converter and maintaining emissions right after start up.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

That's the pump that injects extra air into the exhaust - the extra oxygen is supposed to help the cats heat up faster so they can do their job. (I read this online somewhere when I was reading up on a code that someone's car here threw.)

I don't think the noise is anything to worry about. Both of my roadsters have made odd sounds when I'm stopped but with the engine running. And like you said, it seems like the noise is common, but not associated iwth any failure or trouble.

How much gas in the tank when this happens? Does it only happen with less than, say, 1/4 tank? Does it ever happen with a full tank? Does the light then go off soon there after? The light is driven by the same sensor that operates the fuel gauge (as far as I know, anyway - the tank has a fuel level sensor and a pressure sensor - the latter is for the emissions test that is performed every so often).

I can't imagine why the light would come on with more than 1/8 of a tank.

Figured I would post in this older thread, I have this same issue in my SRT6. When the car is warmed up, stopped, and in Drive, I get this popping noise what sounds like just behind the passenger side door.

Glad to hear I am not alone and it doesn't sound like it is all that uncommon!
