Hmmmm just thinking if they are laser cut via VIN, than anyone could walk up to your car, take down the vin number and order a key!!!! Geeze I'm hiding my VIN.

No - the old XF key will not work because it was laser cut to the old car ignition switch. The battery is still transferable. The key is customer cut (based on VIN) and then you program it to talk to the car.

As far as hiding the VIN, that has been discussed before. Most legitimate dealers will ask for proof of ownership, but some parts counter nitwits will just order the key. So, there is some risk that someone could spend $140 to get a key made to steal your car, if the car is outside and accessible. Since I keep mine garaged, I decided the risk was low and did not put a piece of black electrical tape over the VIN on the windshield.

I paid $114 in Feb 2008 to a chrysler dealership internet parts dept. Had to provide car VIN and use a credit card to get it through the mail even though they are in my home town. There is only one place that cuts and programs these keys so all dealers special order through the same source. The dealer contact I used was ARNIE DEL TORO at 210-253-3060. You do have to follow the simple procedure to match/program it in your car once you get it.

Deb, any reputable dealer would require proof of ownership along with the VIN. So you don't need to worry about covering your VIN. Plus, most thieves aren't able to see the potential return on the investment of $150 for a key and the time and trouble to fool a dealership letting them take a $25,000 car. They're usually of the mind that a brick (free) through the window of the car next to your Crossfire is a lot easier.

As for reprogramming keys, no once a key is synched with a car, it can't be reprogrammed for a different car. The dealerships can do it, but they need a very expensive piece of equipment to do it. Most won't pony-up the cash, and just tell you to pay $150 for a new key.

I paid about $200 a few weeks ago. And then another 40 for programing last week. I read the procedure for self-programming , but decided to let the pros do it and if THEY f'ed it up they would get me a new key-? They said it would come from Germany - but actually came from Fort Worth

Anyone know what a good price for a new Crossfire key is these days?

Don't buy an ebay key expecting it to work on your car with a little programming. It just doesn't work that way. The only thing that ebay keys are good for (as far as a Crossfire goes) is if the case of your key fob is messed up. You can buy an ebay key and swap the guts of your key fob into the ebay fob.

124.99 comes programmed. I've purchased two. They are brand new original part. go to:
https://www.remotesandkeys.com/Produ...ductCode=3191A

You need to supply your vin# and milage. They come from Germany to a dealer. The ignition starts beautifully but sometimes the remote doesn't work until you do the following. Then all is good. I've done it twice:

The switchblade remote key can lose it's synchronization if the buttons are pressed too many times when not in range of the vehicle. If this happens the solution is to simply resynchronize.

Resynchronization:
  1. Insert key into ignition. Don't turn it.
  2. Press the lock button on the switchblade remote key twice in 2 seconds.
  3. Turn the key to ON or RUN within 30 seconds.
  4. Take the key out. Exit vehicle and have the doors closed. Test the remote.
They have keys and remotes for almost every car make and model.

Might be nice if you needed some kinda proof of ownership (you know what happened in "Gone in 60 Seconds"- LOL).

Ha! You're right . It is funny but I guess whoever cuts that key has that info anyway. Be nice to your dealership or they might be handing copies of your keys out.

I ordered a new key today from RemotesandKeys. So it's already programmed. the other key was damaged from someone I know and now the car won't start. Should the new key take care of that or am I going to have to take it in to have them clear something in the security system? I've been searching for just that one answer...does something have to be done before my new key will work...???

Follow programming instructions listed several times in this thread to mate up the new key with your car. I paid $108 for the last one I ordered, from an online Chrysler dealer. Key does have to be "cut" for your particular vehicle (Vehicle ID no.). Been getting good prices lately from Wholesale OEM Chrysler Parts - wermopar.com

New key at Wholesale OEM Chrysler Parts - wermopar.com comes up $101.19, takes a while to locate it go to (parts, chrysler, year, crossfire) keyword search, type in transmitter. Compare the illustration and price! Retail $151.00, your price $101.19. Good Luck!

Jammer, This is who I used also. My cost was $135 incl shipping. Got mine in about 10 days. No problems whatsoever with the key, worked first time.
Proof of Ownership required.
