Default Question for anyone with an oil catch can installed

I installed an oil catch can about 5 months ago. I went to drain it today. There didn't seem to be any oil in it. No oil came out. I also inserted a long drill bit in the drain hole and it came out dry, although about 2 inches in it hit metal. There must be a filter that traps the oil inside. The can is a Needwings kit. If no one knows on the forum I will try to reach Rob at Needwings.

In those 5 months, how many miles have you put on the car?
My catch can has been on for 2 or 3 months and it is still bone dry from what I can tell. But I've only put ~200 miles on it this summer.

Oh, and yes, there is a metal screen type filter in the can.

If you have any other questions, I'm sure Rob w/NW will assist.
Cheers.

Great timing.....I was just getting ready to order one. I will be following this with interest to see if it is really worth it.

If anyone saw Woody empty his at Carlisle, you'd know this is worth it. What came out of there almost made me cry thinking that people are still feeding that crap through their engines.

Rudy, I understand what you are saying....but, Woody's setup is hardly typical. Here are two people with the catch can that has caught zilch. Granted, I have the TVT250 upgrade....so does that make a difference? I don't know. But it is interesting to hear of experiences with it.

Yes, Woody pushes every ounce of his car to the extreme but we're talking you'd empty it every time you change your oil which is 7K miles. I don't know how many miles GlockHit has on his car since the install but RPM only put on 200 so he doesn't even have the filter material coated yet.

I have the small catch can (glass) and it will get a tsp every couple of hundred miles.
However I did not route the tubing to the fromt of the car like many of the newer designs. Mine is mounted on the firewall very near the throttle body (like in an earlier post on here).
If you have an SRT it is woth it - NA not so sure.

I have the TVT265 setup. In fact the reason I bought the catch can was because of excess black carbon like residue (oil residue) covering the inside of my exhaust pipes and sometimes small specs of black residue on the back of the car around the exhaust area. I thought it might be the larger injectors and the flash setting being to rich. When the weather gets cooler here I will pay Anthony a visit to check the settings again.
The residue was not as bad once I put the catch can on the car. The only problem is when I installed the catch can I started using Shell gasoline with a cleaning agent in their premium.
Was it the catch can or the gas that made the difference. I haven't been able to reach Rob about this.

I have driven about 2k miles since installed.

If you don't already have a catch-can installed, and you never need to add engine oil between changes - then it will be a very small amount.

That is unless you never check the oil level - or your engine burns/leaks a lot of oil.

I used this billet unit from JEGS - mounted to the firewall with a pre-existing bolt. - to easy....

But in truth - Unless you race WOT all the time...you probably won't need one...

I drain about this much between oil changes (about every 4K miles)

That's the way to go. To be able to see when it's time to drain is a plus, not to mention the $'s you saved with that unit. Nice job.

That is the one I am using too.
Only difference is I just added mine between the throttle body and the current connection hose.
Only reason I added one was when I installed intake spacers and saw the mess in the runners - could only guess what the cooler looked like.
Lots of throttle body cleaner used.

I had the same problem for the first 2-3K miles....but it has since gone away. I still only run Chevron so I know it wasn't the gas that caused it. I'm just glad that it stopped, but that is what makes me wonder if the catch can is a useful thing to have. Don't know? Still following the posts.

Interesting. I should mention that I had the TVT upgrade installed a year ago. I guess I'll rule the gas out. Have your oil deposits completely gone away, or is it a lesser amount. Mine hasn't completely gone, but it is less. I'm still thinking the setting on that flash is to rich. I didn't have this problem before the change.
Although, in defense of the 265 upgrade it does run a hell of a lot faster. Still think the flash needs to be fine tuned. When I had mine installed by Anthony it was in the beginning stage of production for TVT. I have a Limited with the auto stick. When I had the magnaflow exhaust on my car it had a very aggressive and powerful sound when you would put your foot to the floor. Anyone could tell this car was powerful and not stock.

I've had mine for one year now as well. The exhaust deposits are almost nil compared to what it was when I did the upgrade. I don't have to wipe the tips out after each drive now...it was really bad for a while. There are still some trace amounts, but only noticeable by folks like us.

I think I will go ahead and install the catch can....getting ready to drive from FL to TX for the TMS get-together, so that will be a good 2500 mile interstate/track road trip and should give some idea as to it's effectiveness.

I wonder why we are experiencing the same thing.
Why were these deposits so bad in the beginning stage after the install. I just removed the magnaflow and the inside of the pipes were loaded with this black soot. It is possible that the cars computer is making gradual adjustments for this, but why have it at all. How is your performance from a dead start as compared to kicking the throttle at 60mph. In other words do you notice the power more in the upper rpm's. I also have a sprint booster. This makes it harder to tell what is happening from a dead start when flooring it.

Running the NW version, I get the same as brian, teaspoon to tablespoon every 3-4k (depends how often I check it). Kind of stating the obvious here but if you remove it the can to drain it, make sure you're not wiggling it all around and just coating the inside.
