Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
I run Toyo Proxes 4s for the 6 months when its nasty and PS2s when it is nice. I went with the Proxes because they would fit my stock rims. They do fairly well and will plow snow, but they are not Blizzaks. I don't drive on the days that Blizzaks would be required.
I drove 4 winters on PS2s. Don't!!!!

As Tom said, a nice set of Mercedes 17" SLK wheels and skinny Blizzaks would probably work out best, and adding a 100lb. bag of sand in the trunk would help as well.

I did have to carry a mini shovel in the back last winter, however, since I got stuck parking on side streets. I was pretty simple going in, couldn't out without digging some though.
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
HowardJ...in Indiana, we leave them in the garage...LOL>...but, if you can't do that, I would invest in an old jeep, like my '95 Jeep Cherokee...1K$ driver...but, again, some of us have to have that "dailey driver", so Tom and the others are right, Blizzaks for sure...
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
Just a side note about winter tires and size:
The 1968 VW Beetle has 165/80/15 tires on 15 by 5.5 wheels. And this car would go ANYWHERE - rain, snow, ice, whatever. A buddy had one when I lived in Pittsburgh (lots of hills and nasty winters) and he never got stuck - not even once.
I guess Ferdinand Porsche knew how to design a car!

My 6 was down when it snowed here in vegas.
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
I got stuck a couple of times last winter in my 06 LTD.
I had 100# in the trunk buy my rear tires were pretty bad so I wasn't really surprised.
I may be looking for either a cheap driver or a set of skinny snow wheels and tires and +fireamx suggests for this winter.
The nicks and scratches from all the crap on the road in the winter doesn't help either.

Pittsburgh, PA.
Purchased "Rolf" in December, drove him home 75 miles from Canton, Oh, in a snow and ice storm. Had Conti's on at the time. He's a 6 speed, so I worked the gears smart and got up the hills and around the curves where I saw plenty of "hotdogs" in 4x4's spun out and in the ditch! Enjoyed the sight of that!! Being a good driver helps, being a smart driver helps more.
All season tires are a compromise and will put you in a ditch in the winter. The Mercedes 17" rims with the Blizack tires are a required investment if you drive in the winter. I found mine on Craig's List for a good price. As is 100# of sand in the trunk.
Enjoy driving your Crossfire! Locking it up for the winter would make me sad!

Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
Cat, you've hit it on the head. I do so love seeing the 4x4s and SUVs in the ditch as I buzz by in my sporty little Eclipse (my winter car). Having a brain and knowing how to drive is the key. I've lived in the north east most of my life and it amazes me how many people who do the same STILL can't drive in the snow.
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
I made it through winter in Lexington, KY on the A/S Contis, made it through snow and freezing rain just fine. This year I'll be in Cincinnati on the new Michelin A/S Sport + tires.
You just have to slow down. As long as the road is salted and plowed somewhat it's not that hard to keep moving. Ground clearance can be an issue on poorly plowed roads though.

Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
Well,, I remember when RWD was the standard not the exception. I had a Chevy Monza 4 cylinder while going to college in the early 80's. I drove that little thing through some pretty hairy stuff... No traction control. No Stability control. No snow tires. The only times I had problems was when I was being stupid. Too fast in the snow is the big one...
Re: Does Anyone Drive In The Winter?
The Crossfire has seen 2 winters here in VA - winters here are nothing compared to either Chicago or New England - the Goodyear F1 summer tires DO NOT like the cold and the snow FORGET IT! I'm not going anywhere!
I wouldn't even think of going out in the winter up north without snows on the car and sand in the trunk.

I have to say though, I think the stock A/S conti's provided me with better traction in snow than my Michelin Pilot sport A/S pluses do. So far, the Michelins seem to be lasting longer than the Conti's.
