Default 789 Dealerships Gone

It's a sad day. Chrysler plans to eliminate 789 dealerships, or about 25 percent of its dealers. The national list of dealer closings are here.

My local dealership will be gone. This is sad to hear. I have always had great service with them.

Did they say when? We were hoping to have a CCC getogether at that dealer next month for the car show. I'm curious if that would still be going on now.

No time frame. I think the lawyers are going to get their boxing gloves out for this one.

From what I've read, many of these dealers will fight this out in courts. While all these closures will affect people -- real people with real lives -- the fact is that Chrysler will re-emerge one day out of these ashes. Hopefully, they will have done what Nissan and Fiat did -- do a complete turnaround of their unreliable, unattractive, and unsellable line. Barely less than a decade ago, these car makers were a stone throw from oblivion.

The dealership where I worked (Winter Park Dodge - Plattner Automotive Group) is on the list. I was in there yesterday doing a dealer visit & they knew it was coming. My Chrysler rep said that they have 90 days to appeal their addition to the list. Some of these are older, smaller dealerships but some are older dealerships that had interesting dealer agreements with Chrysler. For example, Bob Dance Dodge (on the list) used to be a 1200 car/month store that has an agreement with Chrysler to be the only Dodge store in all of Seminole Co. They shut it down, now Chrysler is free to have a multi-point store in that county.

It's a very sad day .... many good people, many of my friends, will be out of work and that much less money will be flowing into our local economy. Sad day indeed.

Loosing my 5 star local dealer with a Mercedes tech. I have a card in the mail today that said my parts are in so I'll go down there tomorrow and talk to the owner.

Way to go Obama, now that's gonna stimulate the economy. The dealers should be profitable in their own right with all of the repair and warranty work that they get. The repair work will go elsewhere (I will start doing more myself) and the warranty work will have to go somewhere. There is a Dodge dealer in town, but I'm not going to let them even close to my PT cruiser let alone the Xfire. I may not have a choice though, the nearest dealer besides them is 50 miles away.

A sad day indeed

I heard about the possible closures and their impact on the local communities. This decision will most definitely be validated or overturned in the courts.

I don't have any knowledge of any of the agreements these dealers have with Chrysler, but I suspect they will hold up in court. "You sell our cars until July 2010" , 'nuff said. This is a small number compared to GM, which will close many more. Boys, hold on to your warranty, because soon it will be worthless. O ne B add A ss M ove A merica.

I actually chatted with a salesman when I took my XF in for service a few weeks ago at the dealership that would be closed. He said that they are going well and cannot keep certain vehicles in stock such as the Jeep Wranglers and the new '09 Dodge pickups. I wonder how Chrysler came up with this list? Is it based on the age of the dealerships? Sales?

Do you think Obama closed these dealerships?

Went to my local Jeep only dealer to pick up some parts today and everyone in there looked very concered and were talking about some list.
Well now I know, they are on the hit list. They used to sell Pontiac up until a few years ago, that would have been a double wack for them if they still carried that brand. I will now have to go to a tiny dealership about 30 miles south of me, for parts that is, as I always work on my own cars.
Now the Crossfire is a different story, the local Chrysler dealer threw in the towel last year. I have the extended warranty, GOD HELP US ALL!

Peace
Paul

I know we have a dealership here in town that wasn't selling very many cars at all, but they were all clear to stay open. Why? Well Chrysler hold the nut on the dealership! What are you going to do .... loose your sales & shut down a dealership that a big part of the 30K/day it costs to run the joint goes to you & have a big, empty, foreclosed dealership on your hands?? Actually, now that I think about it we actually have two. One is 20k/day & the big one is 30k/day - both were give Chrysler money to build & that's who they pay. It's not even the size of the group ... AutoNation, Sonic, Terry Taylor, Greenway, Asbury (to name a few) all got hit with closures.

Kim,

Please forgive me; I'm sorry but maybe it has just been a long day and week for me but what the heck is your post saying? I think you of all the folks here probably have the best take on this but you lost me? I really would like to understand your position on this if you can try and explain it to my simple mind...

Stay safe...

Respectfully,

Sorry .... sometimes I forget that not everyone speaks dealer slang. What I'm saying is that Chrysler lent the dealership the money to build the new, great buildings. So they get the nut (payment) on the property because for all intensive purposes - Chrysler is the mortgage holder. Now, take the example of the large multi-story CJD dealership we have in S Orlando. The store hasn't been selling very many cars & they have been trying to close down for months. The original close date was August 2008. It costs this dealership $30,000 per day to open for business. The dealership is a Terry Taylor store (dealership group name - one of the largest) and the group got the money to build the store from Chrysler. Chrysler will not shut that store down because they need to be paid back. They would rather shut down stores that aren't as tied in with them because they have less potential for future profit and can't be pushed around as easily. Obviously this isn't the case with all the closings, but it is a trend in Florida. Does that make sense?
