Garage door buttons
Garage door buttons
I can't speak for everyone but I had a terrible time locating the two outside buttons on the overhead panel so I could open the doors as I pulled in close to the garage.
I decided I had to do something so I took a small artists paint brush, applied some white enamel paint I had on hand for a Totem that I repainted 4 years ago, then after wiping the buttons to remove any body oil I put a spot of paint in the center of each elongated button. The next day I applied another spot of paint.
It really works well in helping you locate the garage door buttons. It has saved me many curse words.
Regarding the apparent weak signal. I sometimes have the same problem, needing to get close enough to the doors to batter them down. Yet other days I can hit the button while one lot away (150') from the garage, on the back side with no windows, and it works fine. We live less than 1/4 mile from a major cell tower and I have blamed it for other problems as well. We have 6 ceiling fans that operate only with remote controls. I have set up separate codes for each, yet find one or more fans or lights, or both on at different times without having turned them on. Our master bedroom is the worst! it loves to have the lights and fan come on at 3:00 AM.

Re: Garage door buttons
Can you guys adjust the sensitivity on the door opener itself? Because the Homelink opener built into my Crossfire will trigger my garage door from farther away than the remote units that came with the door! I have to be in my driveway, which is pretty short, to open the door with the supplied remotes, but I can open it from the Crossfire when I'm almost two houses down the street!

Yeah, the gf and friends call me McGuyver .......
I just used a Q-tip to put a dot in the middle of the button -- had to do two coats to get it thick enough for my liking, then after it dried did the same with clear Krylon, sprayed some in the cap and let it dry a little, then just dabbed it on so it didn't run or remove the glow in the dark paint, again two coats so it would hold up.
Keep a rag under your Q-tip so nothing drips where it shouldn't go!!!

I had difficulty setting up the Home-Link as well but called the number listed and she had me through it in minutes and both doors work with both Crossfires. She will want to know the opener manufacturer and you will need a ladder set up to push the learn button.
Remember that you MUST have the ignition ON to power the Home-Link. It's a home anti-theft feature.

It isn't tough to tell if you have an opener or not. Look on the ceiling at the end of the door travel when in the up position, if you see a rail and motor assemly you have one! Another clue would be if you were given some portable door openers and have a wall-mounted control.
You probably need to have the door serviced, like install one! If not that you likely have a broken spring(s) or the tension is not correct. The door could also be a cheap door that flexes upon opening and creates enough drag to slow or stop the motor. If so, cross-struts can be added.
I think you have the picture by now and should be able to take care of it--without getting out of your car, provided you have a cell phone to call Sears with.

Re: Garage door buttons
I had a heck of a time getting mine to work. I think the second day I owned the car I spent an hour in the driveway trying to set the darn thing. Every so often I would go out and try it again. This went on for about two years. Even downloaded the info from Homelink which wasn't all that different from what is in our manual. Finally one afternoon it took and has worked flawlessly since. So we get a Mercedes which has the same Homelink system, this was in September of 07. Same thing happens. You can literally sit there and mess with it for hours and it wont take. I actually have memorized the instructions I've tried it so many times. I don't know if its the opener or the system but its a real P I t A!
Re: Garage door buttons
I would advise anyone having problems to call the Homelink tech line. They will talk you through it in 10 minutes or less. I've done it 3 times now and had excellent results. The booklet instructions are not quite complete but the tech line lady will guide you through each step. Don't punish yourself!
