I've had many cars tinted over the years. Plus I have done the windows in several homes while helping a friend who was in the business.
-The general rule is to go with the premium stuff. It just lasts longer and is more resistant to scratches.

-Also, keep in mind that the smaller the cabin space the darker it will look. The same tint darkness on a twelve passenger full size van will look very dark on a small car like a Crossfire.

-Go for the kind that has at least 80% UV protection. It makes a real difference on those hot sunny days.

-Law enforcement attention is also a concern. Depending on your state, dark windows make police nervous for obvious reasons.

The photo attached to this email is my wife's car. If I remember it was about 60% + UV, and cost about $180.

I've never tinted a car but with house windows I do a preliminary cut to fit. I use a spray water bottle with a few drops of diswashing soap. Wet down the window, peel off the backing stick it and slide it into place. Use a "bondo" type soft plastic spreader to work the air bubbles toward the sides. Cut it to fit. Then continue to squeeze out the bubbles. Let the sun dry it naturally. It may take a week. Avoid hair dryers! If a small bubble remains after a few days, carefully ***** it with a straight pin and smooth it out.

I will say, if I lived in the Desert areas like a lot of forum regulars
and I never had to drive at or after Dusk I would love tint as DARK
as I could get.

My son has a friend who is a Montgomery County Cop.....they spent about two hours one afternoon peeling the tint out of his police cruiser........he got an inspection ticket for it!

That is awesome! I worked in a tint shop for a little over 2 years and cops used to come in all the time and get DARK tint done, I am talking 5% all the way around and 35% on the windshield. They would drive around in cars that looked like the windows were painted black while giving tickets to people with standard 20%. It always really irked me and this story makes me laugh.....

 

My sons buddy is a nice guy but Al is still a kid at heart. He took us to a Caps game a few weeks ago. Nothing like blasting down the interstate doing 90 in the rain. My heart was in my throat. I made the mistake of saying how nice it would be if he could leave his Charger in my garage so we could swap engines. Those cars are insane!
