how often do you do an oil change?
how often do you do an oil change?
i was looking at the other thread that cross><hair started about the wrong oil weight. and i was reading through it...a couple people said that they change their oil every 5,000 miles and even 7,000 miles....
i thought the recommendation was every 3,000 miles??? am i missing something here?

Re: how often do you do an oil change?
I do mine about every 5K miles. But it all depends on my mood and if I am around the dealership. It is my daily driver but I don't put a lot of miles on the car. If I feel like it has been a while and I am less than 5K miles, I will just get it done.
I put less than 4K miles on my car since the last oil change in the fall. I could wait but it has been a while. I think I will bring it in soon before it gets too hot down here!

But, you are certainly free to change it as often as you can afford.

The system is equipped with a FSS, forgot what it stands for (you can google), it basically monitors air, dust, how you drive, miles, days, etc, to determine when you need an oil change. It will let you know when you need it changed providing you reset it every time you have maitanence done...
The 7,000 interval is correct, the car uses FULLY SYNTHETIC Mobil 1 0w-40 oil..
It also uses 8.5 quarts of it. Fairly expensive..you're looking at about a $75 DIY oil change.
So, change it every 3,000 miles if you want
Re: how often do you do an oil change?
I am of the unyielding belief that if the fluids in a car are well maintained that the car will have the best chance for a long and healthy life ... in that regard, changing the oil at intervals of 3-5000 miles may be more frequent than is recommended, but it's relatively inexpensive insurance .... I don't get all **** about the 3000 mile thing, but will always get it done before hitting 5000 ... and, since I drive an average of about 8000 miles a year, I'm not exactly a frequent flier in the oil-change club ...
Re: how often do you do an oil change?
I change it when it tells me to also. You figure with the ridiculously hard time techs have trying to diagnose problems with the car when it comes to the computer systems, then you can probably assume that this car is pretty smart in its own right. I'm not gonna argue with it when it's been 5 months and it tells me that it still has 1,000 miles left. Not when it costs $135 for an oil change.
Re: how often do you do an oil change?
So, let me get this right. It tells you how many miles you have left before you should change it?
Like some of you said, it'll still say you have 1,000 miles to go before it needs a change. Does it have like a digital countdown or something? lol...or how does it work?
I've only test driven a couple of them, so I'm not that knowledgeable of them. I'll have to download the manuals and read them one day.
Thanks for all the info everyone!

The way I look at it, Mercedes has some of the best engineers around. If they think that 7000 miles is OK, who am I to argue?
I change the oil in my Durango religiously at 3000 miles. But, it uses regular oil that breaks down more rapidly, a cheap spin on filter, nearly half the amount of oil and nearly twice the displacement.

Re: how often do you do an oil change?
You reset after each oil change....(it resets to 7000),....but that doesn't mean after 7,000 miles it will tell you to change the oil. If you drive 65 mph all the time at 72 F....it would probably really let you go 10,000 miles..(it counts down to zero)..if you drive at redline constantly....I don't know...it probably would tell you to change it after 4-5,000??
Chevy's oil life monitor (not synthetic oil) let's us go 8-10K on our HHR....so I have no problem with MB's oil life monitor (synthetic oil)..allowing >7K miles....besides , like I said before...as long as I keep receipts & take it in for the free inspection every 5 years as required......it's got a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty....what do I care if it has an oil related failure!!

Re: how often do you do an oil change?
With a normal car using regular oil, you would change it every 3000 miles or so. But this car uses synthetic oil with has a longer life. Normal changes are between 5000 and 7500 miles. The sensor on the Xfire will tell you when you are due for a change. But keep this in mind, don't use anything less then 93 octane. I've seen the inside of these engines. I used to put in a tank of 93, then maybe a few gallons of 89, then back and forth, but not anymore.

Well that's a downside IMO because premium will make a big difference to your wallet! I hope that gas prices don't go back up to $4 a gallon
Does everyone else fill up Premium too? Or have any of you had problems with Regular Unleaded?
And I'm guessing that 87 is a no go for you right, strupgolf?
