Default What do you think?

Hi all. I am starting to get into the idea of picking up a cheap crossfire and making a high quality, low cost track car. Anyway, I was flipping through craigslist and found this car. Has anyone rebuilt one of these motors? What is the approximate cost? Similar to a standard motor or would be excessively high because the engine is a benz? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Jordan

Knocking? Bad engine? doesn't give much detail on what is actually wrong. Knocking could be caused by a large number of things that doesn't necessarily mean the engine needs to be replaced.

Also, the topic came up in a thread about swapping a N/A motor with the SRT6 motor, there are a lot of problems with replacing the original motor in these cars.

Anyone else want to throw in a little advice?

I really don't think it needs as much to be rebuilt or replaced. Whoever this is needs to figure out why it's knocking.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Its possible that someone never changed the oil or something like that, but the rest of the car seems to be in fair condition. There is no way I would ever pay 5500 for this either. Maybe 3500, maybe. I am planning on going the boosted route but I am not sure that I want to even look at the prices of an srt6 motor. Stock management isn't an issue as a standalone is a must.

There is a guy on the forum that made his into a track car. He did an enginge swap to SRT, full roll cage and gutted the interior. Do a search for HDDP (the guy that did this) and you should be able to get a better sense of what you are looking at. There are a number of people here that do race regularly so go down and check out the race tab on the forum.

If your idea of "track" is a track with curves and such this will be a good fun idea. If your idea of "track" is a straight line, there would be better and easier ways to go.

oh no, I am not a drag racer. I am into auto-x and would love to be able to race in some full fledge track days.

Is this the same basic motor that is in the crossfire?

I realize that somethings aren't, oil pan, intake, and so on but is the long block the same?

We have a couple of racers on the forum. HDDP and MMZ Timelord, either one of these guys would probably give advice as to what you would need to be competitive. Do a search and pick out some of their threads. Good Luck !
