Mashing the brakes just escalates things. Why would you want to get your car crashed even if someone else is going to pay for it? The logic escapes me.

I either
  • ignore them if they're not dangerously close
  • pull aside and let them go tailgate the one in front of me (very satisfying) if they are too close
  • or just take my foot off the gas, press the flashers and coast until they figure it out and pass.
I have actually had people tailgate me to a full stop before going around. Go figure...

I like Timelords idea. I usually drop a gear and tap the clutch. Somewhat dangerous manuver but if they don't back off from that you may likely have a roadrage candidate so I just leave 'em. If they still want to play I go fast untill the law is in view. They usually back off then.

Wimps back off, fools don't notice so.....

I've pulled up to an officer with the fool still behind and signaled the patorlman to pull over. This has worked both times I tried it. One cop gave me a warning, the other took my name as a witness. Both times the fool caught a ticket for speeding and tailgating.

Downside is you can often go a long way before you see a cop, cause that's when you need one. But then you do make good time.

Hasn't happen yet in my XFire.

Why did he give YOU a warning?

I usually try to get out of people's way before they tailgate me, but if they do anyway, I'll either stick my hand out the window and wave them on to pass me or if i want to **** them off Ill slow down. Nailing the brakes is pretty dumb, not only will you not have your car while its in the shop, the person could be a nut and shoot you (worst case scenario, but it happens.) I catch myself doing stupid stuff like tailgating other people when theyre doing 40 in a 55 next to two other trucks doing 40, but I dont like to drive like an idiot.

Because he was a jerk. I was in excess of the limit when I passed him.

And this was when the road rage phenomenon was hot on the news. He "suggested" I encouraged the incident.

In all honesty, I guess he was right. Being stubborn can get you into trouble.

If someone is really being an @sshole about tailing me I employ a lot of the methods mentioned here already. I usually start with a very quick double tap of the brakes which give a surprising amount of people the hint to back off. If they insist on remaining on my tail, the washer fluid gets a spritz, then if they really persist I just back off the gas, slow down to a ridiculous speed, then blast away.

Pretty sure that, by then, they get the point.

Depends, usually I'll just do the Big Ignore....yawn a lot, pretend you're out for a Sunday drive, act bored & just let him/her pass you.
It's just a lot more fun to stomp on it & disappear.
Tailgater? What tailgater?

Agreed old man.

And you know what, when I'm in the Xfire and I can. And so, I do.

I would hazard a guess so do most of us.

Absolutely correct! If you can't have some sport in our sport's cars then just what the heck is it good for?

They loose a few precious car lengths and generally give the finger salute, but WTF, he ain't putting me in the guard rail, not even getting close to my Xfire.
Kurtis, I've driven in the greater Philly area many a time (& Boston, too!) & I've always thought that driving in either city must be kinda like driving in Rome......it's every man for himself! Da_n the little old ladies & kids on bikes !

tapping your brakes is nowhere near as dumb as tailgating someone.

I fly to Boston every year or so just to sharpen my driving skills. Those guys are nuts.

Your safe if you follow two simple rules.

1)Never drive there with out of state plates. They know you are a foreigner. You are toast. They gang up on you.

2)Never, and I mean never, look the other driver in the eye. 'Cause then they know. See rule # 1.

Break either rule and you might as well put it in Park because you are dead meat. However, if you cut people off, drive on the shoulder and stay at least 20 MPH over the posted limit no matter what the conditions, they will think you ar a native.

I rarely ever have a problem with tailgaters as usually I am driving faster that most. However if someone comes up on me I just pull over to the right lane and let them pass. I expect the same coutesy if I am coming up on someone while in the fast lane. I really wish the "the keep right except to pass" was more enforced and then we would not have a problem.

3. Red Lights are advisory - stop at your own risk

4. Using Blinkers is a sign of weakness. It tell the others you are willing to wait until everyone else has merged...

As a transplanted native of Massachusetts and long-time resident of Boston, I can tell you that being a foreigner to the state/city just means you won't know the "etiquette", but drivers don't really exploit that...much...

DITTO.............. I expect the same courtesy. 95% of the time people are paying attention and move over. The other 5% I am just happy I have a fast and nimble SRT that goes around those idiots w/o a problem. jmho

One in a red ford truck, I was going 55mph in a work zone (double fines if you are speeding) with my radar detector going off. The stupid redneck in his F150 thought his truck was fast (like most rednecks do) and kept tailgating me (one lane of traffic). I slowed down to 45-50 just to irritate him so he would be good and pissed when we got out of the work zone. Once we got out, I stayed in the passing lane and slowly sped up to 75mph then got over. The redneck pulled up to pass me and I slowly increased my speed to match his for a while until he got pissed and floored it. When he did I let him get 1 car length in front of me then I floored it and left him 1/2 mile back then I slowed back down to 65 (speed limit is 70) to see if he would try to pass me again lol. I guess skeeter had enough and he just stayed way back and would not get within 20 car lengths of me after that lol.

About 30 miles down the road another redneck in a big ford dual wheel diesel came up on my *** when I was passing another car. He rode my *** within 1/4 a car length so I just took my time passing the car then floored it and left him about 1/2 mile back like the other guy. Well this guy was too stupid to understand his truck was just a gas guzzling brick so he sped back up and rode my *** again so I hit my brakes and scared the hell out of him and after that he stayed back.

You have to love a rednecks mentality, they are all the same. I guess they were in a hurry to get home and watch nascar and beat their women for not having dinner ready on time.
I don't know about the whole diesel thing. You SRT guys have a lot of power and can move, and posibly, just possibly control your own car. You can't control what other people do. The International diesel engines that power those "Redneck wagons put out 325 horse for the 6.0 L and 425 horse for the 6.4L DIT. That's just horsepower, the torque on thoose is both @ 600 lbft. Not to mention that they're in the range of 4-7K lbs. should that hit you, you can forget about the SRT, be happy it doesn't crawl up and over you and come down on your head. I don't care how big you are, 7000lb on your head makes for a bad hair day.
