Default A Solstice!?!?!?

Tonight, as I was on my way to my friend's place to celebrate his birthday, I had to stop at a gas station and fill up because the gas light had just came on. I had just been cruising along listening to some tunes and feeling good. I fill up the tank and go into pay and walk back out just like any other normal day ready to get in my car and continue on the trip. I walk outside, though, and I can sense something in the air. What was it? I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But, just then, I see coming down the road a black Pontiac Solstice Convertible (complete with a douchebag driver) who very noticeably revs his engine as he goes by and slows down as if to wait on me. What do I do? We all know the answer to this.....I jump in my car start it up and take off like a bat out of hell. He challenged me there's no way I could back down from this fight. I of course was thinking to myself I got this easy.....it's a Solstice. By the sound of his car when he rev'd it at me I figured it was mod'd some but I still felt confident. I catch up to him as we start going up a bit of an incline and the road breaks into 2 lanes on our side and I wait for a second and then I decided I would try to pass him and see what he does. As soon as I started to swerve into the other lane, he guns it and I drop it into 3rd as well and hit the gas. At first I was going by him with ease I was like man this is nothing but I wasn't paying close attention and I almost redlined 3rd and I had to poorly swap to 4th but I heard him stay in 3rd for at least 10 more seconds after this which astonishes me because 3rd gear doesn't redline till 80+ in my car. As I shifted gears, he pulled ahead of me abit and we stayed like that until we broke 95 or so and I had him by about a carlength. He then fell in behind me and rode my butt for the next while. We come up to a red light that turns onto the interstate and I figured he would try to race me again but I wasn't going to initiate it so I pull out going left and he does the same but I was starting to swap to 3rd gear at low RPMs like I normally would when he takes off and try as I might with the shape I was in he blew past me and there was nothing I could do about it. It astonished me still that a Solstice could even run with me let alone do what he did. Has anyone else had any experience racing one? I was embarassed and ashamed by these events and hopefully you guys can explain to me what happened there? haha

I think this is the car.

Base price: Solstice GXP, $27,965; Sky Red Line, $29,875
0-to-60-mph time: 5.2 sec
Quarter-mile time: 14.0 sec @ 98 mph

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...omatic_feature

Slower top end.

Top speed (drag limited): 141 mph

BTN, yep, that's the car, my friend has a modded out custom, but he doesn't even try to take on the old SRT...he's driven mine, and I have driven his...his is cool...but it won't run with mine...his looks like a modern version of an Austin Healey...he's coming to the WWDC with us...I know some photos will show up of his work....

I considered a Solstice GXP ......but for $23K my '07 Ltd 6 speed with a lifetime powertrain warranty was a better deal.....most all the GXPs are over $30K. Besides, I never want a convertible....if I roll my coupe......at least it'll be an open casket funeral.

actually, this is my 1st convertable not counting the wranglers I have owned...but not really wanting to test the bars out...I have thrown this little roadster around pretty hard...if I roll, it would have be something pretty drastic...and if I die, I could care less about my funeral....I won't be there....

Against a GXP solstice, your black coupe doesn't stand a chance...

Valorian, you might want to stay away from SS Cobalts too. They use the same motor, and are capable of low 14 sec 1/4 miles. I think you can even get that motor in the HHR.
Remember, you own a "sports car" not a drag racer.

there will always be "sleepers" out there...just have to learn to pick your battles...our state police just got issued their new Mustangs...all are "plain jane" ....wouldn't want to pick a battle w/ them...my dept issued me a '92 Camaro back some time ago...and young guys would see it and pull up beside me giving me the look until I rolled down the tinted window...and the "old sh@t" look would come across their face...it was a fun time to patrol back then...so, always be careful who you challenge or who challenges you....

^ The turbo is now in the Cobalt SS and the HHR SS. The HHR would be a good race against a NA Crossfire, but the Cobalt would come out way ahead.

i had a cobalt ss pull off on me one day. i didn't have my car very long, and down shifted into too high of a gear and that was the end of me. i think i could have stayed with him a little, but he would have still been pulling away if i hit the right gear.

Actually, while real quick from a dead stop, after that the standard limited is nothing special. My 2.5 turbo Volvo S60 is just as quick or maybe even faster. Doesn't look or sound as good tho.

The area that this car really shines in is in the twisty curves and canyons. No Cobalt SS or Solstice GXP is going to hang with you then. Drag racing is another matter. In a straight line, both have got you cold as long as the other driver knows how to drive. But drag racing isn't really what the NA Crossifre is about - or the SRT for that matter. That doesn't mean you can't have fun trying though.

From what I know, the solstice has been collecting AutoX and road course wins handsomely... I wonder where you get the info that the Solstice is not a good handling car for the twisties?? I drive a Crossfire and as much as I would like to believe that my Crossfire can out perform the Sol-Sky twins in the handling department, I find myself enjoying the twisties in my cousin's Solstice much more so than in my Crossfire..
