We are allowed to rate people on whatever vehicle gets them the best rate. Other companies may not have the legal ability to do it that way. If your states' insurance law specifically says you have to be rated on the car you drive then you have to be rated on the car you drive. Our law is if you are a licensed driver in the household you have to be rated on a car. That car also has to be titled in the name of the owner of the insurance policy. Your name can be on it too but if your dad owns the policy then his name has to be on your title to insure that car on his family policy. Until my company tells me different..... Another potential positive about staying on your parents policy as long as you can ... in many cases there are multi-car, multi policy discounts you may enjoy that you can't get on your own (unless you own multiple vehicles yourself and have a home/condo or renters policy of your own)
Jeremy's article sites UK law, last time I checked we live in the US. Like I said Jeremy we don't have enough info to make a judgement on your rate. Its not neccesarily insurance fraud unless your state's insurance laws prohibit it.
What I have seen my company do is if a driver is not listed on a policy and has an accident they usually cover the claim but they can drop the customer or demand that driver be added or legally excluded from the policy. I have never seen a claim turned down based on a car a young driver was driving and we have a ton of them and we have a pretty intense fraud department.

how much older is is "not that much older" because i am 23 and pay way more that $1160 a year for my '07. i do however live in the country with the second highest insurance rates in the country. (harris county, houston, texas) damn you illegal aliens and uninsured motorists.

Okay. We called up and they said we can't switch since I own the crossfire and my dad owns the other vehicles.

I'm actually 23 myself. Allstate originally quoted me $4,900 a year... I shopped around for a while and found MUCH better deals. If I remember correctly, State Farm and Progressive were around $1,700 a year. Nationwide and AIG were about $1,500.

I've never had a ticket or accident and I get a good student discount until I'm 25. My credit is not so good due to the fact that I refuse to own a credit card.

I dont know if it will help, but you might try Hagerty Ins. and see if they can get you a policy. They mostly cover classic cars, but I heard that Crossfires can be covered also. I pay $300/year, but I'm not 19.

Yep, that's the deal. Once you become an owner you are on your own. My kid's cars are all in my name. Saves quite a bit, but they're still students, too.

Ditto.............Maybe you can ask your dad to have it in his name.

Might be a hassle to do, but I'll bet it would save you a mint. But since you are already an 'owner' in the insurance company's eyes I wonder if they would let you go back to 'dependent' status. Worth a call to the insurance company for sure though.

There is a benefit in getting older. I only pay about $220 every 6 months.
Okay FP, who is your insurance with? I am 51 and I have mine with Alstate and it is much higher. And I
have no tickets, accidents, etc....

Very good record, home owners insurance, life, and 4 cars. I'm with State Farm, and have top coverage.

Humm, I may have to call AlState since I have just about the same except for 2 cars and a motor home insured with them. No life insurance through them though.
