City Slickin'
City Slickin'
Well, I'm getting transferred to Washington, DC. My wife and I found a luxury high rise in Alexandria where we'll be living. We need to live close to down town due to the horrible traffic and commuting times. I'm bummed because I will be losing the luxury of a private garage. We have assigned spaces in a very nice, secure, locked underground garage. I also sold my daily driver today because three cars is just too much for the area. Fortunately the subway (METRO) system is very good and will serve as our main mode of transportation. So, it looks like I'll be able to keep the miles down, but I really don't like having my car accessible to vandals eventhough the garage is very secure and upscale.
Re: City Slickin'
If I was you I'd definitely take METRO in from Alexandria. The traffic on that side of the Beltway is silly. Driving in DC is almost as bad as driving in NYC. Good idea to leave the Crossfire at home. Welcome to the area! You are at 6 o'clock on the Beltway I'm at 12 and then some. Old Town has some great restaurants and shopping, you'll like that and a bit less snow than NH.

Welcome to DC. I've been out by Dulles airport since '88.
You probably chose wisely in elimating a car commute into DC with all of the traffic around here. However, I always drive into DC whenever I go to the Verizon center for hockey games or concerts. Of course, those trips are going against afternoon rush hour traffic.
Unlike NH, you may find that it will take you no less than 20 mins or so to get to open country roads worthy of a nice cruise. However, from Alex., you can head in almost any direction and find one.
Some nice driving areas that I know of are:
- Skyline drive
- Harpers Ferry WV
- Georgetown Pike
- About 1 hr away from Summit Point WV road course
There have to be others on the Maryland side considering the rural areas arround the Chesapeake Bay. I rarely drive to MD. Hopefully you will find a few.
Good luck with your parking. Hopefully you can find a safe space for your SRT.

Re: City Slickin'
Welcome to the area! Alexandria is great however traffic anywhere in or around DC is the worst second only to LA imo! And the roads in downtown are no better... and people drive like their heads are on fire!
I mean it's wonderful
The good news is there are more than enough Crossfire owners on here to meet up with.

Re: City Slickin'
It seems like a great transfer. I lived in Washington for a while and absolutely loved it. I didn't even have a car, though, so I have no idea about traffic conditions. I can tell you that the Metro System is absolutely fantastic. That was my only method of transportation and I never had a problem at all.
D.C.'s a great city and I'm sure you'll love it.
Oh, and I wouldn't worry about the security of the garage. I was living in the south-east quarter about a block for the capital and the crime wasn't too bad at all, even though the southeast is supposed to be pretty rough. You should be fine in Alexandria, espeically in a luxury apartment garage. Plus, they'll have cameras.

Thanks everyone! I had no idea there were so many of you in the area! I've been to DC many times on business and visiting some friends, so I knew right away that I had to live close enough to use the METRO. It is much better than dealing with parking spaces and traffic. My wife and I were down there last weekend house hunting and we loved the down town area of DC. We went to a great restraunt/bar called Hudson, which was really nice. Parking at the memorial park area wasn't too bad either for a Saturday. I think it will be a nice experience, especially while it is just the two of us. I'll definitely have to get together with some of you for a gathering. Maybe go to Old Town. I've never been there before, but have heard good things.
See you all in a few weeks!

Sonoronos - When was the last time you were out in the area you described?
Unfortunately where there is a RT 66, Rt 29 expect a lot of traffic. There really isn't an area around the Beltway that isn't crowded and Virginia seems to have the worst of it, well out to Dulles. I drove out to Warrenton which is west of Mannassass and then some on a Saturday morning and it was traffic all the way, even Waarenton was congested. Last time I tell my wife I know where they sell the paint she uses to antique! But like you say the subway here is very clean, very safe and very dependable for the most part.

Re: City Slickin'
You will love living in that area, especially since you won't have to deal with traffic. The Metro can get pretty cramped too during rush hour, but it's better than sitting in traffic. I come up there about once a month for fun and spend about 6 Weeks a year up there for work, so I'll look you up the next time I'm up there. There are so many benefits to living in that area...
1. History/Museums
2. Nightlife
3. Shopping
4. Great Driving roads just minutes away.
5. Better Weather
etc.
