Insurance cancellation question
Insurance cancellation question
I just cancelled my insurance from Allstate seeing as how Geico was much cheaper. But I waited untill the end of the month to do so becuase I already payed money towards the policy on my previous car and just wanted to use that up rather than waiting for them to refund it. Anyway after I cancelled I got a bill from Allstate asking me for a final amount to pay for what I used for that month since the Crossfires premiums are higher than what I put towards it for that month and I believe this bill is much higher than it should be.
My question is, what happens if I just don't pay the final bill? What can they really do since I'm not using them anymore?

Re: Insurance cancellation question
How much could the prorata difference be for a single or partial month? Even moving from my 1999 Mazda Miata to my 2005 Crossfire my premium only went up by about $85 a YEAR!
Like the others have said, you contracted with the insurance company to cover you car for that amount of time. They did their part, you really need to do yours. Had you wrecked the Crossfire during that time they would have paid up far more than you had.

Re: Insurance cancellation question
I too went from Allstate to Geico when I got the SRT-6. Allstate wanted $4,800 a year!!!! I have an absoultely PERFECT driving record, I was astounded! Geico's price: $1,160 a year.
When I brought this to my Allstate salesman's attention he said that Allstate simply does not like the low volume and complicated history of the SRT-6 model. Screw Allstate!

Re: Insurance cancellation question
I think I missed something here...if you paid for the month, and cancelled at the end of the month, then you shouldn't owe them, but then you mentioned something about another car being higher...oh well. I pay mine every 6 months, if I cancel before the 6 months is up, they owe me, If I cancel at the end of six months exactly I owe nothing, but if it carrys over even a day, I owe them...bills are bills and you must pay them, just be sure of your dates when contract took affect and when it is due...and cheap insurance everyone is just that, cheap insurance...don't crash! The Geico Gecko will get you....
Re: Insurance cancellation question
Sounds like you just changed cars and they assessed your Crossfire premium higher then your previous car. If this is the case you need to pay them they can make your life difficult. A few years ago I received my fourth ticket within three years and Farmers decided on their own to switch my insurance to another provider and put my then 18 year old son as the primary driver of my Dodge Diesel Ram for $485 a month. I contacted my agent the minute I received the notification and told them that I agree with their terms and immediately canceled all my auto and home owner's insurance that day. Two months later I receive a letter that I was being turned over to a collector for the unpaid policy which I never accepted and received a mark on my credit report. It took $275 for a letter from my lawyer to set this straight and stop the harassment. The funny thing was that my high risk insurance through Geico was $100 cheaper every six months then what Farmers was charging me for the past 20 years without a single claim!
Re: Insurance cancellation question
A word of warning about GEICO and other companies including the one I work for - I've seen several instances where customers have switched from us to other companies only to find two things...1 they don't match your existing liability limits when they quote you. You might have 100/300/50 and they quote you your state's minimum allowable limit. In Maryland we've seen customers who had 100/300/50 liability switch and only get 20/40/15. This may be due to your incorrect info or the person giving you the quote not asking the right questions. The other issue is your driving record and loss info report. The other insurance company may kindly ask you "any tickets or accidents?" If you can't remember and say "no" they quote you a "clean" rate. When you actually commit to the policy they run your driving record and then the rate goes up. So two suggestions when you do switch to any company, Make sure you get the same coverage you had. If you don't understand what each coverage is talk to your agent, they should take the time to explain it to you. Its one of the things you pay for. The other is ask them
to run your driving record/loss info before they give you a rate. It will save you a great deal of time and frustration unless you know you are clean for at least 3 years. Other companies may also go longer than three for discounts.
I will also remind you that just because your neighbor, a friend, someone on this forum, anyone gets a certain rate does not mean you are entitled to what they are paying. Every person is pretty much unique when it comes to auto insurance.
Before any of switch you companies I'd be more than happy to review your existing policies and make you suggestions as to what you can do. That conversation should be had with your agent at least once a year.

This post was modified because I unfairly singled out GEICO in the original post.

Re: Insurance cancellation question
Pat,
How much does age truly play into premiums for car insurance. I have a clean record, and am paying almost 2500 a year for my base coupe. while i see some people are paying rouhly half that for their srt-6's... i am not complaining i pay what i have to pay, but i was just curious... i am only 23 so i know at 25 there is some sort of a break... but how much does age actually affect someone's insurance premiums, even with a clean record?

Re: Insurance cancellation question
First of all age plays into insurance rates a great deal. Our age tables start at 16 to 21. 21 to 25, 25 to 29 then 29 to 50 or so and then there are still more brackets after that. ZAHANMA again there is far more than age that goes into an insurance premium but yes it is a factor. When I hear someone say "my friend gets this rate" I always tell them then by all means call their friend's company and see if they can get the same rate. Nine times out of ten I get a call back saying well my friend's married or has his house with them too, I don't have either of those things.
Mike I'm glad you are able to maneuver their (GEICO's) web site. A lot of people can't. Most people don't know the what their Liability coverage means. Don't get me wrong GEICO is a great company my warning is mainly if you call them or any other insurance company for a quote or try to use a company website. This is what I am seeing first hand from my customers. If you don't understand basic auto insurance that is Liability limits, under/uninsured limits, med pay. personal injury protection (PIP) stacking/non stacking, tort/no tort, comprehensive, collision then be very careful using web sites for insurance quotes.
Remember there are other things to consider, not just a cheap rate....is the company reputable? Can they pay their claims, is there someone you can talk to, overall communication...do they call you back? respond to your inquiries, review your policy with you?
Last but not least you are the consumer, shop your insurance. Don't just stay with the same company because it was your parent's choice, your friends company whatever.

Re: Insurance cancellation question
Thanks for your advice/info
The reason I started this post was not to find out if was possible to dodge paying what I owed, but to prevent paying what I didn't. I always honor my contracts to the letter.
To make a long boring mathmatical story short, I did the math and this final bill they sent me is just a tad higher than it should be. After reading the posts here and a few at allstateinsurancesucks.com I think I'm just going to pay it. What I found out is that even if you don't truely owe them that amount, allstate clearly thinks you do and they don't change their minds. Ever. Its just not worth the hassle to do anything else. "Your in good hands" my ****...
I'm lucky good ole' Uncle Sam is sending $600 my way for our little "resession" other wise I may have made something of this.
I also asked because I was with State Farm and I ran into a similar situation which was more drastic than this. I didn't pay what they wanted and never herd anything from them and that was years ago. I can only assume they found out that they were in error.

at Progressive we never ran MVR and CLUE until the customer committed to buy the policy.
Re: Insurance cancellation question
You are correct Mr F and you got the truth most of the time? We are allowed to run LIS and credit prior. The MVA report does cost money. I have a way to get driving records through another service we offer. I don't like wasting people's time same as I don't like them wasting mine. More than enough have selective memory loss when it comes to their driving records. That's why I do it the way I do it. My suggestion is meant to cut through the BS. I've never liked the fact first you get a "quote" and then you get a whole other rate when you actually run things.
As for the original question. If you do owe an outstanding balance on your policy when you terminate it Allstate will put the amount into collection. I'm not sure what happened exactly in your case highpower that's why I suggest you call me so I can look into it. If we screwed up I can help you with that. If it is in fact correct I can explain it to you.
