Hi everyone!

Quick question, has anyone had a problem with their Crossfire not starting? The reason I ask is because on 2 occassions now, I have gone to start my Crossfire and nothing happens. The first time, it was parked in the driveway and when I turned on the key, all the lights came on, but nothing happened when I tried to start it except for a very, very faint click. I called a tow truck to come pick it up and when the tow got there, just for the heck of it, I tried to start it and if fired right up. I took it to a mechanic to look it over and he couldn't find anything wrong with it and he said it wasn't the battery.

Then today, my girlfriend was heading to Minneapolis in it and didn't get more than 10 miles from my place and the car died. She was in stop and go traffic and when the traffic started moving, she hit the gas and nothing. She threw it in park and tried to start it and once again, all the lights came on, but nothing happened when she turned the key. She called a tow truck and I met her at the dealership where is was dropped off and again, I hopped in and it fired right up. I left it at the dealership and I'm going to have them look at it in the morning.

I just wanted to see if anyone has had similar problems or any ideas what may be wrong with it. Please let me know. Thank you!

P.S. I just passed 70,000 miles, so no more warranty. Good timing!

 

wow that is really odd, i'm thinking maybe your starter is getting stuck or something

 

Either that or the shifter position switch is out of adjustment or faulty. Try shifting back and forth out of Park or make sure the shifter is as far forward as it will go. Maybe.

 

This is not the same problem but the last time I drove the car was a nice day in March. It sits in a garage with an alarm system so I just left the key in the ignition in the off postion. Didn't know that the battery will still drain with the key in so last week when the sun came out and it's 70 degress I go out to put the top down and the car is dead. All I had to do was get the battery pack out and the car started but that's the last time I leave the key in it.

Believe it or not this seems to be a common problem. Do a search of "mystery no start issue" or "intermittent no start" and you will find a wealth of information. It happened to me and since I replaced the relay control module all has been well. Cost is around $300 and it can be installed in minutes.

 

I had a similar experience. My problem was caused by Chrysler technicians not properly securing the battery cable. This caused my car to cut off intermittently until I took it back to The Chrysler service department.

 

No issues here yet.........

 

Sounds like either the fuel relay or crank sensor. Others have reported the same kind of problems.

 

awkward... my 2004 only has 20k miles and my alternator just went out. Its as though the system has a "hey your not charging" deal and doesnt allow the battery to go completely dead. I was driving and over 2-3 hours my battery light was cutting on and off. By that eveningwhile driving home from work, the battery light stayed on and my other lights started coming on and it just died on me. very typical of the alternator dieing. I waited a 5 or so minutes and it clicked(as though a relay) but not kicking over the starter. After another 5 minutes it started right up, lasted 3 minutes while driving until it did the same thing. I finally got it to the house and just ordered a new valeo fom chryslerpartsdirect and am waiting for it to be overnight hopefully here by wednesday 4/23. bummer to see the car just sitting not able to be driven.

 

I read somewhere that you should NOT leave the key in the ignition when there is a chip in the key fob. It talks to the car all the time and will kill the battery in the key fob.

 

Well, I gave the dealer the information from the discussions Fenwick223 recommended, and they told me that while the internet is useful for a lot of things, it's not that useful for diagnosing car problems. So, after 2 days and $120, I got my car back in the same condition it was in when it was dropped off. Luckily, I have a buddy that is a mechanic, so he picked my car up from the dealer, took it to his shop and put in the new relay control module and I haven't had any problems since.

Also, just so everyone is aware, cost of relay control module from Mercedes was $125, while the same part from Chrysler was $220. The module that was taken out of my car had the Mercedes part number, so I went with the Mercedes part and saved $100.

Its a shame that the Chrysler Tech would not even attempt to swap the module and see if it might solve your problem.

If my car ever experiences this, I'm replacing that module myself. Especially if I can find it for $120. I would gladly spend $120 to keep my Crossfire out of the dealerships garage. Even if it occurs while under my 3/36 bumper to bumper.

This problem has to be the most difficult to diagnose.

 

By chance did you happen to write that part number down or still have a copy of the sales slip. I'm not having any issues at this point, but always like to have info like that handy just in case !

 

Stogey - I think the part# was posted in another thread, but I have the box from the new part in my car still. I'll make sure to post the part number in this thread as well.

 

I had the same problem 2 years ago, it really pissed me off. The car would not start but had full power, I would get the car towed covered by warr. On 4 different occasions it was towed to the dealership and would start fine when it arrived. Each time the computer showed no issues, I even escalated the situation to Chrysler to get compensation for the inconveneice. Finally about 8 months down the road the issue was resolved, it turned out to be a fautly connection to the ignition switch. At one point they even replaced the entire starter, I would say that the 8 month duration of this issue cost Chrysler $2-3 thousand in towes, parts and rentals.

One more thing, the dealership did replace a relay module and that did not resolve the issue.

There are a lot of useful snippets of info here - but sadly scattered around the forum and you have to search to find the information. May I suggest that a "Problem solved" type section is added - you can put in the problem and solutions there, which would make for a good first place to stop if a problem needs diagnosing.
