What can anyone say here.....this sucks. You had a awesome modded ride.
I was looking forward to meeting you at the Dragon too.
I am glad you are physically OK
Hang in there and focus on the positive thing here... you walked away from this tragedy. Gary

Irwin, I truly feel your pain and thankfully you weren't hurt, I am still licking my wounds from my accident. If the insurance totals it , they have to put you in the same financial position prior to the accident. In other words , what would it take to buy a car like yours in your area {minus the mods} millage & condition & color. I used auto trader as a comparison, and don't let them have the car till you have reached a settlement on the car. that also gives you time to get all your goodies off her before they take position of it. Good luck and start looking for the SRT6.

Hey Irwin,

Sorry to see that happen to a fellow forum member. Glad you are OK and can make it to the Dragon Meet. Two weeks ago, I was doing 40+ and out of nowhere came a deer . Stomped on the brakes and missed it. Scared the heck out of my wife and me. I wonder if a pack of deers stand around and dare each other to play Russian roulette? Crazy, they seem to cross the road at the precise moment of you passing by.

something like that but im reconsidering alot of things now... this really might be a huge life changing event, now that i dont have the near 700 a month payementthat leaves me with my meager 300 a month payment on my brand new truck i just finished up my lease on my place and am currently moving my stuff to my moms house since i'll be gone for basic and ait for nearly 6 months so why pay rent when all i need is storage lol, so essentially i have 4 bills now totaling something like 900 dollars a month plus im getting a 20k sign on from the army which would rid me of 300 a month in payemeants and a small grip in my back pocket plus all the pay while im gone that i wont spend from my company and from the military... so im thinking of just enlisting right after boot camp theyll give me another 20k and i could more than likely get at least 3 jumps in pay scale and change my mos to airborne and ranger instead of mp.... all in all what im thinking is this gives me the opportunity to ditch civilian life all together if i so choose. i guess i'll have 6 months to think about it or i could wait til after my first tour in iraq to make my decision which should be within 3 months after i finish ait... i think im gonna wait on the srt for now, i want it but there are other things i want more and if i keep returning to the hole ive dug myself im going to remain trapped. we'll see.

if its a new life you want, so be it, but i'm not sure the "hole" of an SRT-6 is anywhere as near as deep of commitment as enlisting-

it would appear that the military consists of 2 types, the ones who view it as the first option and the ones who view it as the last option-
either way, once you're in, good chance the devil's going to get his due.
a new life, what fun. enjoy.

Sounds to me like you've put a lot of thought into the situation, and possible outcomes. I'm sure you'll do what's best for you.

Either way........we still better see you once in a while around here!

Plenty of Good thinking, now just "put it on the back burner & let it simmer"
it will be become much more Clear in Basic & AIT, you can be sure!

You won't be a NCO for long......should make General in about 3 years with thinking like that. You sound like a young man that just about has his stuff together. Good luck, whatever you decide.

dude am i taking this the wrong way or are you saying its stupid to enlist... cause im enlisted as a reserve right now, knowing full well i will see iraq by the end of this year. i made this decision not as a last or first, but by following what i felt was right, and trying to do something that may help others and im sure i will grow stronger from. if im wrong in how i took this im sorry, but ive been getting allot of crap lately because of my decision and peoples political views, this is not politics to me its a matter of right and wrong, and the right thing to do is to stay there and help them create an infrastructure that will actually support them in a good peaceful way. the same luxury you and i enjoy every day, i believe they deserve to have now. we removed their murderous tyrant of a leader, who kept control by using fear, and now we have a chance to help these people truly govern themselves, why shouldnt i want to help protect them and their human rights? why shouldnt i want to battle the insurgents, the same breed of cowards that attacked our country on 9-11? did everyone forget? i dont even know the last time i saw a yellow ribbon tied on a tree in someones front yard, this country is too soft now, sometimes we have to do thing we dont want to for the greater good. ok im done with my rant

Irwin,

For what it's worth, your logic is right. After two years of corporate/civilian life my nephew is re-upping for the third time and his reasons sound a lot like yours.
Screw the politics. Follow your heart. It may take you through a rough patch but you'll always be doing what you wanted.
As for being in the military, people put it down. Just guys trying to be heroes. It's not about that. It's about what you are willing to do for the right reasons.

I and my family thank you for that.

I agree.

Subtract the politics & the cynicism, and what remains?
A guy who is willing to get off his butt, completely transform his day to day life, and put himself at risk to do his best to help others.

Agree or disagree with enlisting in the military the important thing is getting a good man into a place where there is the opportunity for him to make things better.

Ultimately, it is heart that counts.

i think you read me right but interpreted it wrong. i was amused that you chose to get out of the commitment of a couple of payments by committing to military service... I will say i got the impression that it was a decision you made for financial reasons when the unemployment rate is about 6%. If you have some sort of calling for it, that's a different reason, and not mentioned in your original post. lets face it, military service in todays world is a risky choice. would you regret your decision if you lost a leg? i have pity for those who come back wounded, but not so much for those who come back angry...like blaming big tobacco for your lung cancer... we are fortunate to have young people willing to take that risk. i was not one of them.

I know a kid over there right now who will one day own one of the NFL franchises. His parents thought some service would solve some problems and he agreed. No real passion for service. Well it has been a disaster.

no doubt for this post there will be 10 others telling you it is a great decision. they may very well be right. if your service is based on a zealous desire to serve, you have made a fine and remarkable decision. if your decision to serve is based on money, i'll take the flaming and remain amused that that is your reason to go AND if your decision is based on money, ...paison
