2006 Limited Coupe: Buying a Leftover from the Dealer
2006 Limited Coupe: Buying a Leftover from the Dealer
Big Crossfire fan, long time visitor to the site--first time post...
Last spring I was shopping for a 2006 leftover Limited Coupe & found several at a dealer in a nearby state selling for $10,000 under the $35,000 sticker. Looked like a dealer holdback to me. After hammering out the parameters of a deal over the phone (around $23,000) and leaving it to sit overnight, the dealer called back to say they had sold the car in question. There were others available at the dealership but not with the desired mix of features--wrong color or with a GPS or not a manuel or something that didn't fit my wish list. So, I went to a neighborhood dealer to check out their only '06 Limited and it was priced around $33,000 (not the desired color either) plus, they would not move from that figure. The salesman scoffed at my holdback suggestion and said the dealer in the nearby state probably got the cars at auction or that they had been re-titled (implying such cars in either case were far less desirable). So I didn't buy anything & decided to wait & see what developed in the market.
Now--fast forward to last fall. The same local dealer has the same Limited PLUS another Limited--this one in a desired color--and the prices were $10,000 off sticker (a "hot-deal"on the dealer website). With Christmas & snowy weather coming I decided to wait it out and over the winter weeks the prices kept dropping a few hundred at a time until by February, these cars were offered on the dealer website at just over $20,000. At that point, I was ready to act but before I could, the dealer website removed the "hot-deal" offer and the prices were back at sticker.
Now--here are my questions:
First (a multi-part question), as the auto industry moves into the 2009 model year, what should I expect to pay for a leftover 2006 Limited Coupe (a car that is three years old in car-years and has been discontinued) and is Chrysler doing anything special regarding financing on these cars (like zero % interest for 36 months)? In addition, how do holdbacks from Chrysler work for their dealers on leftover Crossfires? Also, what kind of lifetime warranty--powertrain/bumper-to-bumper--should I get from Chrysler on a 2006?
Second, if the advertised price of a car has been lowered and then raised by the dealer, can the consumer expect to still be able to get the car at the lowest dealer-advertised price--no matter when that price was advertised?
Third--in regard to the two Crossfires at my local dealer--the first (the one that has been in inventory now for about a year) has a local port of entry listed while the other (the more recent arrival--still at least six months in inventory) has a port of entry that is 1,000 miles away. What does this mean? A dealer-trade perhaps--and if so, how would that effect the price?
Thanks in advance for advice, analysis, & suggestions.

Re: 2006 Limited Coupe: Buying a Leftover from the Dealer
It's my understanding that if you are the original owner....& you purchase it after some date in July '07....you get the lifetime powertrain warranty. To keep it in effect...you simply have to allow Chrysler to inspect it for free....within 60 days of the 5th, 10th, 15th, etc. aniversary dates.....to be safe, that probably means 60 days before each date!
In Lee's Summit, MO. I think they are still about 13-14K under sticker.

I do not think that you will find anyone who wouldn't recommend that you suppliment the powertrain warranty with an extended max care warranty. Out of warranty Crossfire problems can be expensive.
I purchased a new 2006 case Coupe in Aug. 2007. for 12k off of sticker. Limiteds were offered at about $13k off sticker for 2006 models. They had no 2007s at the time.
To my dismay, when a shipment of 2007s arrived in the fall, the "Hot deal" for the 2007 base coupes was only $700 more than the 2006 I bought. In hindsight, I may have held out for the 2007.
It seems that there are only a few dealers out there who are willing to pass all of the Crossfire discounts to the buyer. When I bought mine, everyone was willing to give me the 10K off the sticker for a limited ( no base models locally ), but I found only two out of state dealers willing to get to the $13-14k discount.
In the end I went with a base model from an out of state dealer. It would have been nice to have bought local as it might make getting any warranty work go a little smoother. We'll see if I made a mistake.
As for incentives such as low interest rates, my experiance was that with the huge discount, Chrysler did not offer any financing incentives eventhough there were some low rates on other models. I suspect this may not have changed. You usually get one incentive or the other, rarely both.
Good Luck...hope you get your Crossfire, you won't regret it. Don't forget to check out the 2007s. They may not be much more than an '06.

Re: 2006 Limited Coupe: Buying a Leftover from the Dealer
After 3 months of watching "good deals" go by I jumped in on my '06 at around $22,000. Got the lifetime warranty and added the extended 7 year Bumper to Bumper. With Sales tax, came in under $26,000 and Chrysler Financial did it all.
I didn't tell this story to brag, just to say, dealers are eager and Chrysler LLC is behind them.
But why are you worried about the best deal. There are about 1,700 "new" models left in the country. THERE WILL BE NO MORE.
There is no difference between an 04 to 08. They didn't change a thing that matters, so jump in before they are gone.
I spent most of those three months looking for the model and color I wanted. Had to go 750 miles to pick it up. The dealer told me he had 38 units on order for spring '08 and was only going to get three of them.
He who hesitates, misses out. I wouldn't give up one day of driving this car. If you can afford the payments, just go get it!

Re: 2006 Limited Coupe: Buying a Leftover from the Dealer
About a year or so ago, I started looking, in earnest, for a Crossfire Coupe. I did not want to buy it new and had driven several cars that didn't fit the bill. I finally found the car I proudly own, about 45 miles away, in Framingham Mass. I arrived at the dealership with my PT Cruiser all shiney and cleanat about 10:00 am. The Crossfire had 12,000, one owner miles on it and was a color I hadn't thought of but loved. The Alabaster white with the Dark Grey and Cedar interior, auto-stick and was just perfect. It took almost all day to finalize the deal. They gave me what I wanted for my car and the Crossfire was $18,500, I got the 7 year 70,000 mile warranty ( bumper to bumper) and roaside assistance for that duration as well.
$7,700 plus registration and a few other fees and I left at 4:30 PM. At the height of Boston rush hour traffic with this lovely beast. I haven't regretted a thing except for perhaps not holding out for the roadster. Think about it, there are a lot of cars out there, just cars! Crossfires are a way of life, you become smitten rather quickly and the love affair continues, on and on.
