Re: Why Pretend?
In todays world the manufacturer of a car is not well known. The seller is known because they put their brand on it. How many parts in your car are made by someone other than the brander. Most connectors, sensor, instumentation are made by someone else. So in my case I bought my crossfire not because of the brander, manufacturer etc. It had the style and performance I was looking for. I think you would be hard pressed to find ANY car that is completely and utterly designed and built by any one manufacturer. Enjoy the crossfire for what it is not whos badge is on it. personal touches on any car make each one unique, so if you want to rebadge it as a Hyundai then that is fine too.

Re: Why Pretend?
IT IS WHAT IT IS. Chrysler product made by Karman/Mercedes/AMG. Is a Jag a FORD????????? If the Crossfire was totally a Chrysler product made by Chrysler, I would have purchased something else. BUT 90% Karman is the key. What a great machine and I am happy IT IS WHAT IT IS. PERIOD

My XFire is a 2005 Roadster that I've now driven almost a 1000 miles. The vehicle already had 6000 on the odometer when I took it for an extended 10-day test drive. At first I thought I may have had a "low tire" indicator light problem, especially in the cold weather, because the light would come on each morning and I would have to check the tires. Needless to say, I had a screw in one tire where the tread meets the sidewall which required a tire replacement at no cost to me. Bingo, that was the end of the non-existent problem with the "low tire" warning light.
Now for my unofficial critique at 7000 miles on the vehicle, 1000 of which have been put on by me. The handling is superb even in wet weather. The gas mileage is much better than the manufacturer suggests. I'm getting an average of 24 mpg with mostly (85-90%) around town driving. The vehicle rides exceptionally well for a light car of somewhat small stature. The vehicle is virtually rattle free even over the rough roads left from a tough winter in my area. There are no apparent wind noises with the top up but there is road noise from passing vehicles because the soft top doesn't block out the surrounding noises like a coupe. Putting the top up or down couldn't be much simpler. The factory radio is sufficient but not of the caliber considered superior sound. The interior is not luxurious but is attractive and functional. The seats are comfortable, and according to my bride, much more comfortable than the seats in my Corvette, and those were the expensive sport seat option.
One problem was a screw in the tire, and that's not the car's fault. Everything else is going well with no complaints. Future improvements planned: ECU Tune, possibly the Sprint Booster, also considering an upgrade to the factory stereo with XM Satellite capabilities. I've already talked with the local car stereo place (Driver's Side on rte 1 in Wrentham MA) about the Alpine Marine Radio talked about in another thread at the forums. He advised me they should have it when it's released next month (May).
Beto7650, I feel bad that you are dissatified with your Crossfire purchase. Maybe you got a lemon or a previous wreck, and that's why you are hearing noises. As they used to say if you have an irratating noise in your car, turn the radio up. As far as your displeasure with what you call a cheap interior, you obviously looked at the interior before you purchased the car. You must have sat in it and took it for a test drive before you decided to make the purchase, so why didn't the interior you described as cheap turn you off from making the purchase?
As a now deceased car dealer once told me when I questioned him about his pricing of a car that sat on his lot for a year back in the 70's, "Bob, there's a seat for every ***, and an *** for every seat and someone will buy that car for that price." That car was sold a short time later, and yes he paid the asking price.
Beto, drive what you like, and like what you drive. Dump your XFire and move on to what makes you smile. I did when I swapped my Vette for my XFire Roadster and I haven't stopped smiling since.
Bob
Re: Why Pretend?
Thank you! I say when is a Chrysler not a Chrysler? When it is a Crossfire! I am sorry that BETO7650 is so disenchanted with his Xfire. I have had mine since January and it is a love match. I also drive a Honda Civic which is my economy car to haul stuff in. I find myself gravitating to the Xfire even on shopping jaunts. Iadore this car! I couldn't ask for more packed in a car at this price range

I don't mind it being a Chrysler. My other two cars are a 2004 Dodge Durango and a 1989 Jeep Wagoneer.
That said, I love the fact that it has a Mercedes soul, and feel myself smirking when an SLK pulls up beside me.
I'd never rebadge it to say Mercedes on the body... the ENGINE cover however, I'd do that.
I REALLY like the crossfire badges, I think that is more descriptive of what it truly is: it's own entity born of a troubled partnership.
Re: Why Pretend?
In my opinion, the mechanics are mercedes. But the styling is pure Chrysler, which is the BEST in the industry. Daimler can't even dream of making stylish cars like Chrysler has made in the past. No other company has the style of Chrysler. Our crossfires may have mercedes parts, but they're 100% Chrysler cars!
Re: Why Pretend?
I'm really glad this discussion came up. I was considering changing the front calipers to the ones from the AMG C32 or C55 as a few forum members have already done. I've been wrestling whether or not to detail them with a decal logo:
1. AMG
2. Mercedes
3. Brembo (the manufacturer)
4. Chrysler (not likely as decals are not readily had)
5. Leave em blank
I'm leaning towards Brembo, the caliper's manufacturer, since my car is neither a Mercedes or AMG.
Oh yeah, I've never had the gall to describe my car to anyone as a "Mercedes Crossfire".

What about "MOPAR"

Re: Why Pretend?
Well maybe this will help solve the question of whether my Crossfire is a Chrysler or a Mercedes. After over 3 months the Chrysler engineers are at a total loss why my panic button does not work or how to fix it. So last week they asked me to give them a week so they could consult with the Mercedes and Garmen (sp) engineers to see if they could help them with the programming of the body control module using Chrysler's equipment. Now I ask you who built and designed the car and who simply sold it and is trying to do warranty work on it. In my experience, the real pertender when it comes to the Crossfire is Chrysler.
PS I would not trade the car for any other.
