Wow! I'm surprised how insulted I am by this poll.

I've owned another Chrysler product, a Dodge Stealth, and the ONLY reason I bought it was that it was REALLY a Mitsubishi 3000GT. The ONLY differences between the two cars were cosmetic. Before that I owned a Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was identical to the Pontiac Laser and the Eagle Talon - more products NOT designed and produced by the company who's name it bore.

When I think Chrysler, I am reminded of the K car, and the 70's Newports. Not exactly the cream of automotive excellence or excitement. Right or wrong, that's what I mentally associate the name Chrysler with. When I think about Mercedes and AMG, I think of the AMG Hammer - one of the world's fastest production sedans ever made. When I hear the name Karmann, I associate it with the Karmann Ghia - a cool little roadster classic. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Chrysler has never made a good car, or that Mercedes can only produce perfect cars. But I would much rather my car be associated with Mercedes, AMG, and Karmann than with the folks that put their emblem on the hood, wheels, and trunk.

In fact, if I had not known that the Crossfire really had very little to do with Chrysler, I would never have bought it. So, yes, I probably will remove the Chrysler badges from my Crossfire. In fact, I'm planning to make a nice Karmann badge to replace them with. I also have an AMG badge for the trunk and Kompressor badges for the fenders.

Yesterday I was driving behind a fellow in a Chevy Silverado. He had a bumper sticker that said "Please don't put MY flag on your foreign car" showing an American flag. I laughed out loud at his stupidity. His "American" Silverado was made in Mexico or Canada. The "Japanese" car I was driving at the time was made in Normal, Illinois. I'm sure he would have been pissed if I had put HIS flag on my "foreign" car. (And don't even get me started on my opinion about patriotism, having served my country in the Army, I can put MY flag on any damn car I want!)

The Silverado owner's ridiculous opinion about flags and "foreign" cars is just as ridiculous as denying the Crossfire's German design and manufacture.

It seems that many people here have different opnions about our cars and their heritage. It's actually very simple. We all love our Crossfires, and we wish to associate them with other things that we love. If I want to call mine a Mercedes, so be it. If you want to call yours a Chrysler, so be it. Who cares? Don't rain on my parade, and I won't rain on yours.

Actually Walc, you were quite lucky nobody ever tried stealing your gas cap that had the Gremlin logo on it.
The AMC dealer my Dad managed must have sold a several hundred "lockable" Gremlin gas caps during the first couple years of production. It seemed kids thought Gremlin gas caps made very desirable souvenirs.
If they were built today, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they didn't turn up as "neck chains" for youngsters looking for a little extra BLING.

 

My Gremlin was purple, with white accent stripes. Maybe, the delinquents thought I was a pimp and they gave me professional courtesy.

IMO, I bought my XFire because it is a cool, fast car that handles great didn't care who made. But in reality know matter how you slice it it's a Mercedes product with a Chrysler name plate on it.

 

Like you, +fireamx and tom2112, I also seem to have a thing for what quickly become "orphan" cars. We may think we have great taste (and we do), but the appliance-loving masses probably feel otherwise...

Well, I often lament the fact that what I want out of a car is NOT what the masses want. Cars I love are often discontinued because of lack of sales. 3000GT, Crossfire SRT-6, etc. Six years ago, when I bought my 2003 Eclipse (it was summer of 2002), there was NOTHING on the market that I could afford that was in my opinion worth driving. The Eclipse was a compromise - it was cheap, had some distict styling queues that I liked, and it had a little bit of zip with 200hp. It most certainly was a disappointment going from my Stealth to the Eclipse. But it had to be done. Too bad the Stealth hadn't last another 6 months. I could've bought a Nissan 350z. Oh well, I have an SRT-6 now, and it's all good. I sure would like to be able to buy a second version of a car I fall in love with, though. They just keep killing them off.

 

I, like coupe girl traded in a Mercedes for my Crossfire. Having owned and appreciated the tank like build quality of my Mercedes, I quickly recognized the Crossfire as a Mercedes regardless of the badge branding. If it was Crysler beyond the badges, I would have passed on it. I loved the post that showed 1% US/Canada, that must be the badges. I am just glad my car was built in Germany and not by Cryslers' alcoholic, drug abusing UAW workers. I rented a Chysler 300 a few weeks back. What a piece of crap interior quality! Although the E class ride was pretty decent.

 

It is really interesting that we Crossfire owners are drawn to cars that don't sell well.
When I recently bought my Crossfire, I was seriously shopping Corvettes. They are very nice cars and there are major discounts on 2007's. However, try as I might, I just couldn't get turned on by a car that it seems like everyone has.
I feel right at home with all of you.

 

I have to admit that I've been very impressed by recent Ford build quality in both the Mustang and F-series trucks. On the other hand, I was less than impressed by several 2000 to 2003 Mercedes.
Of course, as previously stated, I am kind of odd. BMW's don't turn me on; but, my 2007 Volvo S60R* really does. Likewise, my Crossfire. Regardless, of what brand it is or isn't.

Volvo?!? What happened to style? Did you use up your style quota by buying the Crossfire?

 

Actually, the S60R has "style", which is probably why it didn't appeal to Volvo purists.

 

I must be looking at the wrong car, but the S60 looks like a 5 series or 7 series BMW to me. It's a bit too rounded off on the edges and corners too. But that's just my personal view. Is the S60R much different looking?

 

When you park your CrossFire in a sea of Chrysler models can you see the common parts more or is it more at home swapping parts with a Mercedes ?? Simple really ...Duh

 

Well they had to give the Mercedes a Chrysler look to sell it as a Chrysler...Duh

 

The S60R doesn't have the panache of the Crossfire; but, I think it's cool.

This car shares NOTHING with Chrysler other than the UGLY BADGE. I will keep the WINGS because it was sold as a Chrysler product. That's just another thing that makes this car so special.
