Question Fan Control ?

Anyone had their fan control fail? I started up my 94' coupe today and when it showed that the engine was warm, I turned on the fan control on to heat up the interior and defrost the front window......I didn't hear the fan kick on and I was getting a fog on the front window on the inside.

I checked all of the fuses in the engine compartment as the manual said that the climate control fuses are located in the engine compartment, but all of the fuses are fine..

Any thoughts or I am stuck going to the dealer to have the problem diagnosed? Anyone run into this problem?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's a common Mercedes problem for the fan motors to burn up. Unfortunately they decided that mine wasn't covered under recall but newer ones were. I just got a replacement off eBay for a lot less than an OEM Mercedes part and it actually works.

Thanks for the feedback. Was it hard to remove and install the new blower motor? Do you have a part number I can search for?

I'd be willing to tackle the removal and replacement of the motor if someone has some basic instructions.

Any help is greatly appreciated. It's pretty cold here in Illinois...opening the window to clear the windshield is not a lot of fun at 20 degrees.

Thank you

Wait, are you talking about the heater fan? If so, I can't help ya. Sorry! I thought you were talking about the radiator cooling fan.

What model is your car?

Yes....I'm talking about the heater fan, not the radiator fan. When I try to heat up the cabin or defrost the front window, the fan does not turn on when I turn on fan.

Does this sound like a resistor or a bad fan motor? I'm not opposed to doing the work myself, but don't want to buy the wrong part and waste money.

Thanks

my resistor went bad. the way to check it is to turn the fan all the way to high. if the fan works on high the resistor is bad. had the same problem on the shop van. its a 2000 dodge full size hummm? could the resistor on the xfire, be a mopar part?

Unhappy Re: Fan Control ?

Unfortunately, the heater fan does not work in any position....not even on high.

Angry Re: Fan Control ?

Well......I took my car into the dealer and they said that my blower motor is shot!

They said they can order a new one and it will take 4 to 5 days to get the part. $320 for a new blower motor and $123 to install it.

Has anyone had a blower motor replaced and do these costs seem correct?

Thanks

Cool Re: Fan Control ?

Almost all larger cities have shops that can and will rewind any motor, assuming that you can get it out and deliver it to them. I feel that they can and will do it for less than $300+.
Look in the Yellow Pages under "Electric Motors-Service"

It gets even better..............

After the service dept called to tell me that it was going to cost $320 for the motor and $120 to install the new blower motor (and a 4 to 5 day wait for the part), I went up to pick up the car and take it home.

When I arrived at the dealership, they handed me my key. The key fob had black electrical tape around the end where you could attach other keys and there was a ticket number attached to the tape. I pealed off the electrical tape to find that they had broken the plastic loop that allows you to put extra keys on the fob!!!!!!!

I said "WTF?" The service consultant said he didn't notice if the key fob was broken when I gave it to him or not.....I got pretty hot with the guy and said that the key was in perfect condition when I gave it to him. He said, "I'll have to check with the mechanic and give you a call later." I left the service dept and went home. A couple hours passed so I called and spoke with the service consultant and told him that he should have to order me a new fob. He said he'd call me back. They acted like I was trying to pull a fast one and get a new key or something!!!! He called 20 minutes later and said that he confronted the mechanic who admitted that he dropped the key and it broke the plastic end off. The service writer's attitude was much better when he knew that I was telling the truth and he ordered me a new key fob..........

Now I just have to endure the cold with no heater fan for a few more days..........

Thanks for all the help.

I had to have my blower replaced (2005 roadster). The control unit is part of the blower assembly so the whole thing gets changed at once, but after I got it back the fan behaved intermittantly erratic. I took it in and they replaced the resistor pack and all has been fine since. Mine was covered by warranty (or maybe the extended warranty inssurance that I also have) so it didn't cost anything to fix. You might check on the warranty details.

Thanks for the info. I'm out of warranty for a blower replacement, but at least still under warranty with the 7/70 powertrain. Hopefully, replacing the blower motor solves my problem.
