Scooter Saved Me
Scooter Saved Me
Heading to work this morning on a 4 lane road, rolling about 35, I was chugging east toward a 4 lane intersection when a west bound panel truck turned in front of me. When he saw me (I had lights on) he panicked, jammed on the brakes and stopped right in front of me blocking both of my lanes. Options? Go straight and hit him, Try to swing around behind him and maybe find some more oncoming traffic or try to turn right (south). So I hammer the brakes and try to turn south. Turning as hard as I dare without going into a broad side slide I become aware that this is not going to have a happy ending. I am bearing down on the center island and looking to lay flat the center island sign. Then I notice that no one is using the north bound turning lane. So I zig for that. You know how time slows down just before the **** hits the fan? I could see those North bound folks leaning away from their doors with big eyes and grim looks. At the last second I let up slightly on the brakes and crank her hard and OH Wonder! of Wonders!! the tires bite. I cleared those folks in the north bound lane by about the width of playing card, maybe two. Now I am heading south down the north bound turning lane and running out of room there, so I hop the dividing island and come to a stop pointing south in the proper lane. Scooter saved my a$$. I have never owned another car that would have pulled this off. I have never owned a car that would have even come close.
Rims are fine. Enough snow was built up to turn the curb into a ramp. The only casualty was slightly soiled drawers. Scooter gets an extra ration of oats this week.

Re: Scooter Saved Me
Way to go Uncle Al.
Having met you a couple times at Chicagoland meets makes this story even better. I can just picture you maneuvering your Crossfire around these obstacles to avoid the potential disaster. As I said way to go and now I guess you know what you and the Crossfire are capable of.
See you in the spring sometime , Somewhere.
