For once I believe the dealer is correct. Even here in Ga I had the same situation after the first cold snap all four tires indicated a 2 to 3 psi drop.

All tires on all cars do this. In cold weather, the air in the tire lowers in pressure. Conversely, it expands - higher pressure - in hot weather. This is why tires say a "max. pressure cold" inflation PSI. Once a cold tire is pressurized, upon driving, the tire hearts up and the air in the tire heats and expands - so your measured 30 PSI cold, for example, might read 32-33 PSI if the tire has been driven at high speed and has heated up.

Typically, you do have to put a little more air in the tires in winter because the cold air keeps the air in the tire from heating up as much as it does in the summer. I had a tire light myself several weeks ago. I reinflated my tires to the correct pressure cold - everything has been fine since.

Is the tpms necessary for all systems to operate correctly? I mean things like cruise and stability control, etc. I understand fitting new tpms units to replacement winter wheels is quite expensive just to tell you what your tire pressure gauge already does.

Folks still use them, no?

If you stop buying those apple tires you will not have to worry about tire worms.

Cool Re: Tire pressure monitor???

You can also have your tires filled with Nitrogen rather than Air, nitrogen is more temperature stable and colder temps will not set off the TPMS.

TPMS is going to communicate to the Body Control Module which in turn communicates to the PCM/ECM/ECU whatever it's called today. The TPMS (which is now standard equipment across all models all makes in USA as of model year 08) detects a pressure change between tires. So if they're all uniformly low, nothing will be noted, but if one tire is off more than the others, the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) will illuminate storing a DTC in the computer. The TPMS can talk to the BCM along with other sensors like VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and ABS module. VSS is very important nowadays with ESP, ABS, and cruise control which is a servo motor actuated by the BCM. Lots of acronyms... So if a tire is severely underinflated, it will cause more drag so one wheel will spin more than an other causing the traction control to kick in disabling the cruise like you stepping on the brake pedal switch. Fun stuff huh? These computers...

When I buy a new set of tires, most likely the Goodyear F1 All Seasons, will I have to do anything with the air pressure sensor? If so, what?

Thanks.

Probably not, well as long as the installer knows how to "reset" the sensors. A donut shaped magnet passed over each valve will do the trick.
Interestingly, I'm having the same tires installed tomorrow.
Trust me though, no tire will save you from any snow over 3" in this car! I got stuck in a motel parking lot last year with my Dunlop "winter" tires in a lousy 3" of snow. Only some light cursing & some rocking got the car a'movin again!

Be sure your tire dealer knows that these are Aluminum TPS Sensors and does not misplace the aluminum valve core that comes in the TPMS Sensor. If they install the standard steel valve core in the sensor they will corrode in place and ruin the sensor. My dealer informed me that one of mine was "frozen" and they had to remove the TPMS Sensor from the wheel to let the air out. The valve stem on that sensor later broke just above the core when they were putting air in the tire.
Another potential problem is if they are not careful they can break the valve stem when mounting the tire and you will have to replace the sensor. Mine have been on order for 5 weeks now with no sign of when they will arrive.

Plus Tire pressure sensors are like 180$ for the cheap ones, while getting new tires fitted opt for the nitrogen fill. Nitrogen gas reacts less to OAT conditions. (Outside Air Temperature)

If it can be made by man, then it can be unmade by man. But why would you want to. Just because the idiot light is out doesn't mean communication with the rest of the car stops...

Starting to search the forum for tire pressure monitor issues. My warning light came on during the start of a long road trip. I checked the tires and the fronts were 33, rears 35. A few hundred miles later I stopped at a Walmart and had them all filled cold to 35. Light has not gone out.

Any suggestions on what to do to fix the problem? Car is out of warranty and I don't feel like spending $100 deductible that's on my extended warranty....yet.
