Default Paint help...

Well, against my instincts, I agreed to join a friend for lunch at a restaurant in the bad side of town. Came out after lunch to find that something had damaged my car.. the driver side right under that rear window. How would I repair this? Do I put anything on before touch-up paint? Whatever hit it put little dents and went pretty deep.

That is strange...looks almost like they wanted to pry up that window to reach around and unlock the door.

Either that or a BB gun shot.

As for repair, I would recomend that you make sure the surface is very dry and there is no surface rust forming. To assure yourself about the rust, go by some naval jelly or rust killing acid (several types at pep boys, auto zone, etc), and apply it to the bare metal, then wipe off.

Follow that with your touch up paint immediately after so that there isn't time for the surface to oxidize even the smallest amount.

Touch-up paint never looks quite right though, and unfortunately you will always see those spots. It may be worth it to you to claim it and have the insurance repair it. To do it correctly, they will likely have to paint the scratched areas, with a little bit of blending into the current 'good' areas, then re-clear the whole rear 1/4 panel, sail panel and door. I believe they will be able to match it close enough to where they wont have to mess with the roof...and there is a 'gutter' where they should be able to hide a paint line.

*sigh* I'm wishing I had chosen a lower deductible, lol. Is there anything I can fill it in with to make it look smoother, rather than like a dent covered with paint?

I think to get it smooth you will have to sand around it, and likely ruin more paint then it is worth.

Bummer man...I hate low life scum, and it is everywhere these days.

Oh, I could go on for a while about that topic, but I suppose that would belong in another forum, haha. My car has not had much luck since I took posession of it. I'm tempted to lock it away in the garage and never take it out again, just for fear that someone will back into it or do whatever it is they just did to it... I have no idea how they did that to my car...

I had somebody shoot a BB gun at my xfire and was covered under a comprehensive claim and should be zero deductable and fixed at the body shop at no cost to me.

It is a strange place to have damage on your car. But, the fun of the XFire is in driving it, so no garage queen duty for your XFire...I beg. However, you probably ought to stay out of the part of town where the problem occurred.

static-- I have some good news and some bad news. I have a Sapphire xfire and I too tried to touch up my car with OEM paint kit. The good news is that I can warn you now that unless your a pro I wouldn't do it yourself! The bad news is that the Chrysler paint kit for the Sapphire Silver Blue is way off the real color of the car. I actually got two bottles thinking that my first one was somehow incorrect! The paint is much darker than the color of the car. That was the only time I was wishing I had a more neutral color on my XFire such as black or white! Nevertheless you could go to a touch up shop and see what they can do for you if you don't want to use insurance. Good luck!

Well, the body shop I took it to this morning put a layer of paint on it and gave me the remainder of the touch-up paint that he had mixed himself. He told me to just keep filling it in very carefully after each layer dries, and eventually it will look a little bit better. To repaint the whole panel would cost $300.
