I am with USAA I have a great rate as well. Worth looking into. Like most car insurance websites you can put in your VIN and "driving/driver criterion" and it get an estimate at USAA's website.

Insurance pricing is all over the map and what works good for one person won't always be good for another. I shop car insurance almost yearly and after several years of finding rates equal to or greater than what I had, I figured I was doing pretty good.

Then one day those Progressive ads got to me (you know, the ones where they say they give you their rate and the rates of their competitors?). Well, I filled out all the required info on their website and, sure enough, they kicked back their rates and 3 others. Progressive was within a few dollars of what I was already paying, one of their competitors was a couple hundred dollars more, a second was right in the ballpark but the third, Geico, was several hundred dollars less!! So I checked out Geico's site and the numbers were accurate, so I switched.

Now, at the same time I had been recommended Wawanesa and had requested a quote from them. While their website and payment options are not as streamlined or user friendly as Geico, their rates were competitive with Geico. The ease of dealing with Geico kept me there. A year later I get a letter from Wawanesa with the tag line "A lot can change in a year" and, boy, were they right!!! They dropped their rates to me pretty significantly and I've now been with them for 2 years.

Also your insurance rates are based on your credit score, the better the score the better the rate.

Taking a few minutes on the progressive.com site might help. Your rates are too high.

Single females have some of the worst insurance rates in the US for some reason. We go through it all the time with divorces or young females that move off their parent's policies. Only suggestion I can give you is shop around, you'd be amazed at the difference in rates out there. Another suggestion is sit down with your agent and ask him to go over the policy, "is there any where I can cut, are there any discounts I'm entitled to I might be missing?"
You want at least 100/300/100 liability and un/underinsured coverage, check your state for personal injury protection. Comprehensive is a fairly low cost coverage I'm sure you have, shoot for a low deductible on that. It covers animal hits, glass, vandalism fire and theft. Collision is a more expensive coverage, repairs your car in an at fault accident. Pick a deductible you are comfortable paying. FYI the higher the deductible the lower the cost of that coverage.
Those are the basic coverage's you should be concerned with, hope it helps.

Pat

p.s. I just saw someone mention those Progressive ads. There is no way they can give you my rate or anyone else's. Thats pure BS. They estimate but until you sit down with an agent from a particular company do not believe those ads. Also SRT above said your rates are too high...impossible to know SRT as we don't know any of this person's driving record or anything else, be careful making a generalized statement like that, again something I hear all the time. "Why are my rates so much more that my buddies?" Maybe because you have three at fault accidents, you are single and you live with your parents. Your buddy is clean, married and owns his home which is insured by the same insurance company.

Patpur,

I used the progressive.com site as a start point. I use a good old fashioned agent for my insurance. Knowing the agent takes care of the intangibles and gives me warm fuzzies. I like to be able to say "thank you" or "you b@st@rd" in person.

As far as the claim that her rates are too high, I used the info she gave as to her driving age and record. The one thing I did not consider was if she previously had insurance and whether or not it was continuous coverage. I discovered this a while back with my own daughter. She had moved away for a year and a half to Boston. She didn't drive there at all. When she returned she was socked with an extremely high rate because she had not continued with her insurance. The agent said she could have maintained her coverage even if she wasn't actively driving. He said the rates were considerably lower than she had been paying before she left. Either way, it took almost a year of no incident driving to get the insurance back down.

i used to work for Progressive. they have a whole department that does research into those comparisons, calling other companies and getting quotes, etc. after giving a caller the comparison rates, there were MANY instances where they had already been calling around and they stated the comparisons were accurate.

LOL. Too true!!

A lot of it depends on you and the area you live in. I'm with Nationwide because they're like $50 less per month than every other major company I've gotten a quote from. But I know I've talked to younger people who have cheaper insurance and when I called in gotten a higher quote from the same company.

If it makes you feel better, I pay around $1,200 every 6 months. But I do have one accident.

Ah, well, I realize now why my insurance is as high as it is - my credit. While I have fabulous credit, I have a LOT of it - two cars, two credit cards, a couple of medical issues I am still paying off, and a card specifically for my wedding dress. My credit is really good because I have always paid on time for everything, but I still have a lot of stuff I owe on. Hopefully in a year when I have knocked out pretty much all of my bills, my insurance will go down a bit. Thanks guys.

When I lived in NY in 1988 my 18 yr old son paid thousands for insurance on his Mustang SVO. Wrecked it on graduation night. That day he had received notice that his collision insurance was cancelled due to his failing to have the car photo inspected! Guess who paid for the car? He drove an '83 Buick for years after that. Whatever it costs keep the insurance going.

I get my insurance through state farm. I pay $67/month for full coverage, plus glass. So that makes it $402/for 6 months, with $500 deductibles on both.
Age 29, with one speeding ticket years ago.

I forgot to even mention the credit issue which Allstate calls an insurance score and its something I disagree with. But if she has a great credit score that shouldn't be what's affecting her rate.
As for Progressive, I tried it and they were way off, like someone said, think it was SRT...always call your agent.

SHOP AROUND! I'm paying $600 with All State (I'm 26, no tickets, no accidents) with 300K liability and a 1K deductible. Other insurance carriers have quoted me much higher. You just have a shop around.

Wow. I am seriously shocked. Darn my "high performance vehicle."
I'm a male, 22, under my own policy and only pay $120 a month for mine.

Always read the small print. I have a relative that had Progressive insurance. They quoted her an attractive price so she signed up. The "attractive price" raised after three months and the small print read that there was a $250 penalty if you did not keep their insurance for a year.

I pay $600 for 6 months with $0 deductible comprehensive and $250 for collision through American Family for a SRT-6. Only about a $20 per month increase from my previous vehicle - a 2003 MINI Cooper S.
