Default Transmission Maintenance?

Can someone please tell me at how many miles do I need to do a transmission flush? Also, is it the synthetic or ATF4?
Sorry, one more. Is it ok to add more break fluid when it is a different kind than the one already in. Thanks.

I believe the manual says change the trans fluid at 80,000 miles and thats for the life of the car.

For Automatics I've been told for my Honda it was every 35-40K miles (at least that's what they said when my transmission went out that you should change it that often).

Like oil changes, I would change it sooner than recommended. the better you take care of the fluids the longer the engine/tranny will last.

Honda's "weakest link" is their automatic transmissions. I changed the trans fluid in my daughters Civic every 20k. It's actually easier to do than the oil and filter.
If you drive your auto Crossfire relatively hard, I would definitely change it more often. If you plan on keeping your Crossfire for a long time, then maybe even every 30 or 40k. Think of it as cheap insurance.

What about for manual transmissions? The manual states there's about 1.7 qts of it in there.

I don't know which type tranny you have, auto or manual, but if you download the 3,000 page maintenance manual here on this forum, all the fluid specs are listed. I don't know how many miles you have on your car, but the manual tranny fluid should be good for about 50,000 miles on a car that is a "regular driver".

Also note... there is NOT a transmission dipstick on the Automatic Transmission. You have to drain the fluid and then refill. I recommend a fluid and filter change after the first 15-20k miles. This removes the 'break in period' debris from the system. After that, every 50k miles is probably enough unless you really drive it hard.

As to the manual transmission... I'm not sure, but whatever the maintenance schedule says, cut it in half for the first one, then follow the schedule after that. Again to get rid of the 'break in period' debris.

This is just the way I was taught to do things by my father. He happened to be a mechanic of 22 years in the Marine Corps., so I kind a feel he knows his stuff.

Since the manual tranny uses straight weight synthetic engine oil, and it's in a hermetically sealed environment, and all it does is lubricate gears, you should be able to go quite some time before changes. Unless of course you "grind" your gears on a regular basis. Then you may want to change it more often.

I believe the automatic trans uses automatic trans fluid, and I would buy it only at a Chrysler or Mercedes dealer. (Their specific brand name & part #).

A while back, Chrysler was having some problems with their overdrive trannys, and I heard they were blaming it on people not using the correct fluid, and not changing it enough. I'm sure "Feets" probably knows the whole story on that.

As TimeLord pointed out, getting the break-in oil out is always a good idea too.

Kinda the way I was taught, routine and timely fluid / filter replacement will prolong the life of your engine internals. $100 in fluid replacement can save you $1,000 in repairs. I think there's an old saying about that, I just can't think of what it is right now... Let's try this one, "penny wise, pound foolish" ?

Jody: I was just advised that the track is going to be open Thursday night from 5-8 pm for early arrivals from out of town. Not that it matters to you, I might trailer the car down Thursday night and get it off the trailer and into the garage so I can sleep-in on Friday morning. I'll send you a PM.

I'm still the newbie but here you go: I stopped by my local Chrysler dealer to pick up some transmission fluid for "topping off" my automatic just in case. I purchased 1 quart which cost (get ready) $18.53. I get home only to find out that there is no dip stick and, as someone else pointed out, no service required until 80K miles. The unopened bottle is going back for a refund. In case anyone is still interested the label says: MOPAR Automatic Transmission Fluid, Crossfire/Sprinter, Part No. 05127382AB.

Yeah, I shopped around and the best I got for 12 quart was $216 ($18 a quart) plus the service.
Also the brake flush is $82 with the synthetic fluid. I'm doing my services every 15k since I hit the track often.

This is really good info. thanks! Now, since I found Mobil 1 synthetic for $10 a quart; I just need to know if its comparable. It should be better right? Here is the site http://www.drillspot.com/products/28...sion-Fluid?s=1

I have nothing but the highest praise for Mobil 1 products.
But why not just use the tranny fluid that's recommended by the factory for the product that was designed for it to be used in.

That way if anything goes wrong with your transmission down the road, they can't say you used the wrong fluid.

Oh wait a minute, I just remembered, your car is anything but stock, so your warranty is probably voided anyway.

In that case, enjoy your Mobil 1.

Yeah the people at the dealer always notice the nitrous kit and etc. But the price is what drives my curiosity. 12 quarts of the dealer fluid is $220 + the service of $190. WOW!!!
So I think I will get the aftermarket stuff such as mobil 1 or even better AMSOIL at $107 for 12 quarts. Chrysler and Mercedes ATF4 compatible
Site: https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

Hope this info helps the next guy on a low budget too.

MOPAR Automatic Transmission Fluid, Crossfire/Sprinter, Part No. 05127382AB is NOT compatible with Mobil 1 ATF.

Yeah, called mercedes and they said the xfire takes ATF+4, so I bought the 12 quarts of AMSOIL, which is at least twice better than Mobil 1 Dexron III.

Question Re: Transmission Maintenance?

I too want to change my trans fluid, now at 40,000 kms, but how do you get that weird cap-seal off the fluid tube?

Thanks,
Jim in New Zealand
