Default The mangy cat vs my convertible top

I park on the driveway. Nothing I can do about that.
Yesterday my black soft top was covered in cat hair, and there were loosened threads where the beast sharpened it's claws.
Short of engaging firearms (or, better yet, sicking my retired racing greyhound loose), what can I do to repel this vermin?
During more peaceful times, I merely look upon cats as an alternative food source if times ever get tough, but now I'm ready to get medieval.

Not that I like cats (BECAUSE I HATE THEM), but, it is the owner of the beast that should be shot. Leash laws apply to cats, as well as dogs. If they can't keep them contained...they don't need them.

Get some clear tape pieces and place it on top of your car with the sticky side up. Kitty hops up and gets tape stuck to itself. I'm willing to bet one taped up cat will not want to lay there again. Or you could try something like this too: http://www.getridofgophers.com/cat-repeller.htm

Pour a trail of antifreeze around the car. Kitty steps in it... Kitty licks paw... Kitty is no more...

Cool Re: The mangy cat vs my convertible top

In most states there are no leash laws for cats, they are considered "predators" and can roam free. Talk to the owners if that does not work take matters into your own hands. Take a video or picture if you can, and show it to the owner. The next time the cat tears up your top, then KEY their car...and continue to do this until they either control the cat or get rid of it. Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" as it relates to justice..."for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

Unhappy Re: The mangy cat vs my convertible top

Poison is not the answer.

Do try the tape thing or other repellant. PetCo or some such store will have these strips. They work great with my cat. He never claws the furniture anymore. You might not have to have them on the top for long before he decides that this is not a cool place to sleep. Of course they may be a bother - you don't want to deal with them when you take the top down or drive around with theses strips on the top even though they are difficult to see.

There are also sprays made for upholstered furniture that you could use. The sprays I have tried either have a citrus base or don't smell bad to humans.

Do a web search on the subject. You'll probably come up with a sensible solution. Please don't harm the cat. I totally sympathize with you but there has to be another solution.

If the cat is not a feral animal find the owner and have a talk with them.

Step 1... Purchase an animal "Live Trap" from Farmers Supply.

Step 2... Purchase cat food from grocery store.

Step 3... Set Trap next to your car.

Step 4... Kapture Convertible Killing Kitty in trap, and relocate to another neighborhood. (Preferably a toxic waste dump).

Step 5...( Optional) Purchase a car cover.

You need a car cover. I've seen covers for just the top of the car available but seems like a waste of $$.
A full cover will protect the whole car and won't blow off or get ripped off as easily. Seems like a simple solution and a good idea if you have critters roaming around.

I'd suggest a Car Cover, with the extra added defense of the pieces of tape as a deterrent. Car cover alone may just look like a giant sofa to the cat, and it will continue using it as a nail sharpener. Besides, most car covers are thin enough to allow the cats claws to go through it, and still damage your top, or scratch your paint.
I'm with Midlife, don't harm the cat for doing something they've been doing since prehistoric times.
I realize, if the cats run loose they're fair game for predators, getting hit by traffic, catching disease's, etc. And good luck finding the owner, they could be several blocks away, or the cat could simply be a stray.
Check with your local animal control office. Ours will not try to catch it, but if you can, they will take the cat off your hands.

Setting a trap, poison, sicking a dog on the cat. I'm no member of PITA by any stretch of the imagination, but violence towards cats is unacceptable, period! Even if its a stray its wrong and what if the cat was someone's indoor/outdoor cat, how would you feel to see someone's kid crying their eyes out. Step up and buy a car cover and/ or look into a non-violent deterrent to the problem. FWIW, I am a cat person and proud of it too!!!

Setting a trap, poison, sicking a dog on the cat,..

I'm NOT. Jeez.

So far, the sticky tape gets my vote. I love animals, even worthless ones like cats. And I would never let my beloved greyhound off lead. Ever try to catch one? All I'm sayin' is, it WOULD be funny.

I really was kidding about the antifreeze. We have a rescued Greyhound, too, and when she runs - there's no stopping here. She actually raced a motorcycle down the street a year or two ago and she almost won...

She is never off-leash any more - she's just too fast.

Well...I'm no cat person, but I don't really like the idea of just offing the little butt-lickers either. Here's an idea form a friend I know that has three cats in the house. They use the "pepper towel." Here's how it works. They have a towel that has been heavily dusted with cyan pepper. Anything in the house that they don't want the cats to jump on, or even get near, they put the towel on for just a day or two. The cats won't even go near the pepper. Maybe you could try a towel on your top for a night or two.

I'm all for the poison.
I have the same problem. And i hate the fact that i am forced to deal with the problem. the cats in our neighborhood also urinate on my wheels. I already spoke to the neighbor, who said that's what cats do. I said well i can send my kids to pee on your cars, that's what young boys do.
Do you think its possible to send them a bill for a replacement roof?

Why is it that...that is what 99.9% of cat owners say? Totally irresponsible on their part...I say do whatever it takes after a response like that. Because...THAT IS WHAT I DO!!!

The cats owner is responsible for its actions and if they did not take care of it I would call animal control, capture it or do whatever it takes to stop the destruction of my property. To many people today do not take care of their responsibilities, if it were mine I would be totally embarrassed. Its not OK for someone else or their pet to ruin my things I don't care if that is their nature. I have two dogs and one kitty and they NEVER leave my yard unless they are on a leash. Sorry, that's my thoughts.

You are absolutely correct, my friend. I too am a pet owner and a very responsible one. That is all that it takes - responsibility for your, AND YOUR PET'S, actions.

A friend of mine got ticked off because a neighbor would walk his Great Dane every day and the dog left massive piles on his yard. He scooped up one of them, dumped it on the guys lawn and said - the next one goes on the hood of your car (a classic Gull-wing Mercedes). The neighbor started walking the dog in the field across the street...
