Default Resetting FSS after oil change

I am changing my oil tomorrow. Doing it ourselves. My XF is a 2004. My owner's manual is for a 2005 (stupid dealership gave me wrong one). Anyway, can someone tell me if the owner's manual for the 2005 that has the instructions to reset after oil change is the same instructions for my 2004?

I want to reset it properly. What are the steps for a 2004, if no one minds, so I can compare what the 2005 manual instructions say.

Thanks!

Well here is how it's listed in my Manual.

1. Turn key to the ON/Run position.

2. Within one second press the ****/button twice.

3. The present status for days or distance is displayed. Within 10 seconds turn the key to OFF.

4. Press and hold the ****/button, while turning the key to ON/RUN again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more. Continue to hold the ****/button.

After approximately 10 seconds, a signal sounds and the display shows 7,000 miles for approximately 10 seconds.

5. Release the ****/button.

So really you just have to play with your ****/button a few times to get it to work.

I have done it a few times now and seem to not be able to do it the first time. It has taken me 2 or 3 attempts to reset it every time...I can't figure out if it is operator error and/or poor instructions. If at first you don't succeed, try again!

np I just happen to have my manual sitting at my desk when I saw your post. I've only had to reset mine once so far as the dealer never did it, and it took me at least 2 try's to get it.

So you got it on the first time?

You're smarter than the rest of us!

Actually, my husband did it while I was a work. He's retired, so I took the Explorer to work while he changed the oil and reset the FSS. I just now asked him how many times before it reset. He said "the second time"...so we are all in the same boat (tail) ha ha ha...

Anyway, glad it's done and reset!
Thanks for all your help here. You guys are amazing.

It makes you wonder if anyone has got it on the first time. Maybe it is a software bug? Or are we all doing the same wrong thing the first time?

Personally, I think it's in the timing. That part where it says "within ONE second, push **** twice". Maybe we are doing it so fast, we just miss the perfect time. I mean, come one, with ONE SECOND?? LOL.

Just my thoughts.

It only took me 5-6 tries to reset the FSS on my 2007 crossfire. Does that make me twice as dumb as the other crossfire idiots doing it for the first time ? However , I was able to link my garage door opener.(just don't ask how many tries that took) I wish I could speak German.

I set the garage door in one try but I did the same procedure to my Subaru the week before so I had some practice. As for the FSS...that took about 15 tries. Seriously.

I had my oil changed and later i reset the FSS. Now when I start my car it does not show any miles to the next needed oil change. Does it take a while before the oil gets dirty enough to start showing some kind of count down for needed service??

I always forget to close the door. Takes me multiple tries before I realize what I've done wrong. Lol
