Default Nurburgring for Easter

This is really only of interest to the UK contingent but this seems to be where most people look first - I half expect to see tumbleweed blowing through whenever I visit the Europe section.

As I have mentioned in other threads I was planning a trip to drive the Nurburgring in the next couple of months. This has now going to happen over the Easter weekend following a hookup with a Porsche Club member. The plan is to leave on Friday 14th, recce laps in the evening, get some proper laps in on the saturday, a relaxing evening then return late on the Sunday.

Its short notice, I know, but if anyone is interested then either post here or drop me a PM.

Cheers,
Simon.

Thanks Derek,

Nothing has been booked yet as the Porsche guy is still sorting ferry times out, but hopefully it will be on, if not now, certainly in a couple of months.

Video camera all set to go! I'm going to be taking it easy as there is no way I am going to be able to learn 13.5 mile track in the time and don't fancy nursing shredded tyres all the way back through Germany, Belgium and France.

This picture was from my trip there last year. Waiting at the front of the queue for the ferry in our 'Priority Boarding' lane completely on our own and a car pulled up behind - I couldn't believe it, it was a Red Roadster! Everyone else was jammed up in the other 'normal' lanes and there we sat two Crossfires on our own. We boarded ahead of everyone else sat side by side at the front of the ferry ready to drive off first at the other end! Apart from a German Crossfire at the 'Ring that was the only other one we saw in the four day trip!

The lane behind is completely empty!

Have a great time at the Ring, I think you'll find that you won't be able to shoot in car vids though. Those were outlawed some time back due to "insurance" reasons. There's lots of threads on this subject. You can, however, shoot video from track side along the course, just not from inside the car while running.

Hope you can give us the blow by blow about the XF on the course, can't wait to hear about.

Edit: here's a very good site for info about the 'Ring for anyone interested in having a go!

Unhappy Re: Nurburgring for Easter

Unfortunately due to various logistical issues with ferries etc and a dwindling number of attendees as the dater approached (what with Easter and all) I have had to postpone the trip to the Ring for a few weeks, probably late May after another track day I have booked on the 6th.

Anyway, on the plus side I have been able to use the time constructively continuing with my brake cooling project. I am just about to post up the latest pics in the original thread...I'll put a link here on in a while.

Simon.

EDIT:

Here's the link to the brake project:

Just as an update to this thread, I mentioned previously that videos have been banned on the Nurburgring for a while, and most of the video's you find are created by "novice drivers". However, I recently found a fairly recent and "sanctioned" video of an incredible run around the Nurburgring and the Nordschliffe by BMW test Driver Hans Stuck! I believe BMW owns the track.

For those not familiar with this track, it is actually two tracks. The Nurburing is the modern day Formula One track, built next to (attached) to the old Nurburing Nordschliffe formula one track. they are both dedicated circuits, so don't fear about the incredible closing and passing speeds, if they are on that track, they know what they are in for.

First lap and 3/4's is a warm up on the modern day track. Watch for a left hand turn on the second lap just after the chicane and look for small stalls/buildings on the right...this is the beginning of the Nordschliffe run. It is amazing. By his reaction, this was no "milk run". Enjoy! Turn up the sound, the audio is really good.

I would have posted this in the racing section but since it's in reference to Woody's post, I've put it here first. I'll post it again in Racing for HDDP and all the other XF racer kids. I really hope Woody gets to take his XF out for a run there and, if so, please give us all the details!

Yes, it does seem funny but flicking your 'directional' on is normal track etiquette for non-competitive sessions, it lets the faster driver know he's been spotted.

...and yes, I count myself lucky just to have a Crossfire at all.

Great vid Sennaspirit! Fear not, I'm still planning a run this summer - can't wait to get back there, its such an incredibly awe inspiring place!
Details to follow...

Xfire/Woody,

Glad you guys liked it as much as I did. I've watched it about a dozen times already. I've made about 100 simulation runs on that course (Grand Turismo4) and its incredible to see Stuck ripping it for real. I particularly liked the inside move he made on that chap on the last right hander on the Norschliffe before entering the long straight...talk about cutting it close.

Woody...you don't nearly need to push that hard! We want that XF of yours in one piece afterwards.
