I only have 2 complaints, both minor.
1 - no HD Radio. I got used to a couple very nice stations in the Pittsburgh area in my old car.
2 - no iPod connection out the back, I would love to have a iPod hooked up with hidden cable out the back to the glovebox
The display is very nice in dim/dark times, and you can choose nice color matching options. In bright light is it useless, and in extremely bright light you can read it OK because it kind of inverts. The faceplate is angled/thicker at the bottom, and that is all that prevents it from looking perfect. I eased the top of the trim out of its snaps and that looks a bit better.
Helluva radio for $120, counting a 16gb micro USB drive, wiring, speaker repair, and capacitors for the fronts, I have about $200 in a great sounding system. I REALLY want to put a Clarion M502 in, they look perfect, but less features/no CD, and no color matching, but I could always solder new leds in...
So it sounds worse than the stock unit......wonder why.
The main reason I am thinking about it is the Bluetooth feature. Want to pair my phone (android) to it so GPS nav instructions come out the speakers. are you using it in a roadster or a coupe, mine is a coupe, maybe the lighting and sound would be better in a coupe ???

The radio reception may be a little shorter range as discussed (AM is pretty weak, but FM works fine for my local stations). But the local sound (USB, CD, iPhone) is very good. I would say that it is better than OEM in my opinion. (I have no measurement data to prove it, but it more than meets my needs)

You can't beat this thing for the price to feature ratio. No its not perfect, but neither is any other $100 receiver out there.

Bluetooth works perfectly for phone calls. Song quality bit rate is better over the cable versus Bluetooth streaming, so go direct when playing from iPod/ phone.

See the picture for a Clarion back (having the same radio in multiple cars makes it easy to remember which button to push to answer the phone)..

Besides the regular multiple connector for power and speakers that connects to the XF harness (lower right and not plugged in) there are also wires with plugs on the back for rear subwoofer (L&R) Front audio preamp, aux in (L&R)*, external mike, usb*, antenna*, SirusXM, wired remorte. (I use the ones with * but not sure about value of USB.

All of these wires make quite a lump in back of the radio & suspect can move another 1/4" into the dash if I cut off the unused ones.

That said the sound, particularly CDs ripped at max (192) on my cell phone, is far better than satellite and as good as any radio I have.

Currently have over 300 albums on my cell phone using about 15.7GB on a 32 GB microSD card. No matter which car I get in (and some friends) all are available. And Torque Pro and GPS with current traffic. One cell phone plan to rule them all.

ps that is a neat clock but does it have bluetooth ? (my usual engine display includes a clock)

Not with a Sawzall I hope.

The mods should reverse the title of this thread. It should read;

No, I said it sounded NO worse that stock, if not better. Also I do use the Bluetooth setup for my phone as well. Only to answer, I never really place calls when driving, so I haven't really played with it enough to know how convenient and easy to use that feature is. I have the microphone right above the rear view mirror, and plan to hide it fully, either in the homelink assembly, or maybe with a factory looking headliner mic.
I have a coupe, and the reception seems fine for me in FM, and sounds very good, but I didn't use the factory radio long enough to give a valid range comparison.
Also I just bought a non working Clarion M502 from eBay this morning, $25 shipped and worse case, I can judge how much I like the looks and feasibility of changing colors before spending over $100 for a working one.
From the pictures I have seen, I agree, it looks more like a factory radio than the Becker.

But I do think the Kenwood does look pretty good, the silver is a great match, only needs more gloss/polish, or maybe cleared over to match %100.

I missed your point, but what can look more factory than a factory radio.

Remember that only the 2004 models had a glossy finish to the silver trim, later models had a somewhat flatter finish to the silver trim. The difference is quite noticeable.

Now that you mention it I did read something about the different finish, but never really sunk in. I need to look at more pictures. As for the Clarion, from the pictures I have seen, I like how symmetrical it looks and it even has a central spine like the rest of the center stack and console. Is there any difference in the trim other than the finish? Is it cleared, or just glossier?

From memory I'd say it was cleared.

I actually had a clock radio back in the 60's that had that display !

( Unfortunately, it doesn't make that little 'clicky' sound as it changes. )
Can you post/share pictures of this installed? I did some more looking and it seems like I would like some of the features of this radio. I am considering getting another m502 to putz with and make the one I got work, but that clock, album art, rear USB, all add up to something I might like.

I'll get you some pictures tomorrow, meanwhile here's one on fleabay with a "make an offer" :
( $170 is a bit steep for a 10 year old head unit )
Alpine Ida X001 | eBay

Be aware there is NO BT, but a $30 Motorola visor unit would cure that.
