Replacement head-unit
Replacement head-unit
Ok so i have been surfing through the forum and cannot seem to find a straight answer. I want a built in NAV unit to replace the simple one i have now. My Mom just got a brand new ford explorer and I love the built in look of the radio/navigation unit. I dont really care if there is a stock unit or after market. I dont particularly like the rear view mirror GPS. Thanks for all the help!!
Re: Replacement head-unit
Unless you want to modify the entire console to fit a double din unit you just need to look for a single din with navigation and a flip out screen. There may be some single din that can do navigation but the screen will be pretty small. The other alternative is to get the factory unit with nav but that is all done by CD and I'm not sure how up to date the maps are.
Re: Replacement head-unit
DIN refers to a standardized radio/stereo size for vehicles (large enough to accept a CD). The size is 2" high by 7" wide. 2 DIN or double DIN refers to units that are twice as high as the standard DIN, and so 1 DIN would be the standard DIN specification.

Re: Replacement head-unit
Not to tell you how to spend your money, but do you have a smart phone? And if you do, why not use it as your NAV unit? I have an Android device that uses Google maps for it's navigation and I have to say that it is more accurate than my Garmin (even after the Garmin gets it's map update). Also, the map updates for the phone are free. Get a holder for your phone and a charging cord and then spend the other $650 on some other updates

Yah, that's exactly correct. I would never rely on a stereo to do GPS/location work.
A $50 "phablet" (phone tablet ... around 5" screen) and a $40 mount will give you better SATNAV, music, vehicle and Intertubes options than the OEM nav unit or any suction cup GPS thingy ever would.
