Advice on buying a used crossfire?
Advice on buying a used crossfire?
Hello! I have been obsessively looking at Crossfires for the last week or so (specifically interested in a manual transmission w/ convertible top). I am new to the forum, and have been trying to learn more about the car before committing to any purchases. I have been reading about the rear sway bar bracket tearing loose and wonder if this is a deal breaker for purchasing a Crossfire due to what seems to be enormous repair costs and difficulty reinforcing preemptively. The design seems to be guaranteed to fail due to corrosion and/or fatigue, with the only question being “when”.
Is there a reasonable solution to this problem? Are there other major concerns I may have missed? I appreciate any advice the community would be willing to share. Feel free to “sell me” on purchasing a Crossfire, because I really do love the look and story!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Advice on buying a used crossfire?
Saying that the design seems doomed to failure is like saying that most of the people you saw at a hospital were sick, that is what some people say after reading this forum. This forum is about problems. not too many people write threads about their car having no problems.

I didn’t mean to come across as a Debbie downer, I guess I was hoping for several people to say “you only have that problem if you drive on salty northeastern US roads or can’t stop hitting curbs“ 😂
Re: Advice on buying a used crossfire?
I have three Crossfires and I am not concerned about the probability of that happening to one of them. There were 76,014 Crossfires built. I may have missed some, but from my forum searches there have been 19 forum members reporting the problem. Concern about it happening should not be a critical factor in purchasing a Crossfire. However, it would be wise to check for the problem on a pre purchase inspection.
Re: Advice on buying a used crossfire?
I have three as well and the chassis' seem tight on all of them: roadster at 58k, SRT6 at 36k, and coupe at 44k. You are looking at a 12-15 year old car. Find someone with a lift, or have it inspected, and check out all suspension components for rust or play. Pull the codes (if any). Look for rust under door frames. Try to obtain service records for periodic fluid changes like coolant, brake, and transmission (if MT6). Check brakes and rotors although these have not been expensive aftermarket replacement parts in the past. Bounce issues off this forum. Good luck.
