Portable Jump Start
Portable Jump Start
I was at the DC Auto Show last January and there was a guy selling portable jump start kits. Neat little lithium battery unit that he said could start a car 8 times without recharging. I bought one and put it in the trunk of my Crossfire.
Yesterday I went out to start my Crossfire, and totally dead battery. No panel lights, nothing. I put a meter across the battery and it showed 1.1 volts.
Okay, so I brought out my jump starter, hooked it to the battery and got in the car. Panel lights. Turned the key and the starter turned the engine over nicely, but no start. I guess our car needs a lot of amps to get it started.
Went out a bought a new battery and problem solved.
As soon as it started up I noticed the dome light was on. Now I know why the battery was dead. I had changed oil two days ago and turned the dome light on so that I could read my manual on resetting the FSS.

Re: Portable Jump Start
Even if you had a straight drive if the battery was completely dead it would not help you to park on a hill you would need battery power to run the electronics and the fuel pump.

Actually 180 I was answering the question posed by theglot, post#3
Re: Portable Jump Start
Back in the 1980s I drove my Dodge van for months with an effectively dead battery, I could even park on the level and push it can catch it in 2nd. As long as it would power the alternator field coil, once everything spun over, it would fire.
