2005 ignition key issue
Re: 2005 ignition key issue
tumbler and key still in the ignition. I removed the tumbler per the pdf but getting the tumbler
re-inserted was touch and go. I can see where some folks would have a problem getting it back in.
The key in KDW4Him's picture appears to be in position 0.
I assumed that moving the key to the ON position (position 1) would unlock the steering column in
order to get the ignition housing out. Maybe not.
Eliminating that step would make it some easier. Looking back over the pdf I'm not sure what was accomplished by removing the tumbler.
Surely onehundred80 will impart some wisdom.
Re: 2005 ignition key issue
Well, all done and it works! I had bought the '05 Crossfire in Tampa from used car dealer last December while staying in Clearwater. So I called him, told him of my predicament and was able to use his garage, mechanic and tools. The mechanic looked through the pdf and dove in. We had in knocked out in about and hour and a half. We did have to take the tumbler out in order to make enough room to pull the assembly out. With the tumbler still in and the assembly loose, pulling it to the right ran it into plastic molding on the dash. Taking the tumbler out allowed us to pull the assembly to the right just behind the molding and it came right out. The tumbler went back in fine. The only hiccup we had was getting the black cap back over the tumbler. The cap is notched on the inside and slides over a square tapered nub. The difficulty was getting it to slide over. You couldn't push it down with your thumb, had to tap it down. At this point we tried the key several tiimes to make sure it turned freely before we buttoned it up. One other thing, the mechanic did not disconnect any battery cables as the pdf indicates. No issues from that. Thanks to all for the great input.
Re: 2005 ignition key issue
It is always safer to disconnect the battery. Mind you the pollution sensors will need to be reset by driving the car as I sadly know too well.

I have done two so far and didn't need to take the tumblers out. I have explained how to do it in the original sticky key thread, post #802
