Default I have a 181 - SL55 fuel pump is on the way.

I just wanted to post this for the next guy that runs lean at the top of 3rd gear and wonders WTF after installing his 181 or larger crank pulley.

I've ordered the SL55 fuel pump and will post up the results once I have it installed and hit the track.

This one should be a piece of cake, but I think I'll be visiting your shop when it's H/E time. Thanks Steve.

Wasnt the sl55 fuel pump already tried and not a fix? It has less pressure in the mid range or something, I dont really remember,.... good luck though, if its not the answer , do the Needswings fuel upgrade.

Some guy in Europe tried it and it worked, so I hope it works. Anyway, if it doesn't work we'll know not to try it anymore.

So, let me get this straight; the solution for running lean with a Eurocharged product is to buy a solution from their competitor? I'm not trying to open that can of worms.

Eurocharged told me I probably have a bad fuel pump or clogged filter, so I was thinking the larger pump would correct the issue. Why would I go out and buy an expensive fuel system? Eurocharged would have stated a larger fueling system was required if I needed it.

a member here made the setup, it works, I figured I would throw it out there to you, Save you a head ache maybe?.. and if you racing and beating on the car this would be a fix.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Hopefully it's just a clogged filter or my pump is on the fritz like Jerry told me yesterday. He would of told me if the fuel system was inadequate. Thanks for the help though. If the new pump and filter doesn't work I'll do a 3rd gear datalog and see if a revision can correct the issue. Thanks.

I had the same issue, AF was leaning out badly at 5000, went with the Needswings /Waldig fuel upgrade, and now run rich. The upgrade also uses a zeitronix, so if you already have one, the cost is not as bad. I now need to get with Jerry, and get the IDC corrected due to the adequate supply of fuel.
I have had my 181 for almost 4 years now, and when they were first produced, I don't think anyone was aware of the leaning issue.
There is lots of discussion about the standard filter/regulator, and from what I read the only way to fix the issue was to replace them both, but I'll be interested to see your results.
incidently your write -up of the gauge pod inspired me to build one for my AFR gauge...thanks for the inspiration !

I wouldn't really call them competitors. NW sells performance harware upgrades, many of which are developed with Waldig's help. Eurocharged is 'primarily' a tuner which helps marry the parts to your computer.

For me the optioon of having an adjustable fuel regulator is more significant than any given pump. Woody

Hopefully the new fuel pump works out great for you. It seems to be hit or miss from what I'm seeing. Good luck and let us know how you make out at the track if it works out well.

This mighy be a dumb question but has anyone tried using a apex SAFC? I had it on my srt-4 and worked great. Added/ subtracted fuel on command.

Hey Grip,

Any reason you're not going to larger injectors? Or will this waste gas even when not pushing hard?

I was looking at these, but the 550cc ones:

Ultimately I'd like to have the NW fuel system, but I just can't justify spending the money on it and the Zextronix (sp?).

As for the larger injectors, I'm pretty certain I saw a few posts on here stating that our injectors are good for a lot more power and the lean issue was mostly due to the pump setup.

As for the SL55 pump, I just got an email from the company I ordered the pump from. They apparently can't find the pump, and canceled my order.

I just contacted a local machine shop and they quoted me $100 to machine down the pulley, so I may just go that route. I really don't need or want issues at this point and I find this is likely the path of least resistance.

It might be easier to call Eurocharged and see if they have a 178mm pulley. I think they still make the 178s and will almost suredly be able to find a home for the 181...you might be able to offer them $100+pulley or just the pulley and then you won't have to worry about putting too much stress on the metal while turning it down.

Just a thought...but I'd rather see you succeed and keep the 181mm pulley.

Grip Grip
Good luck in sorting the fueling issue out. Hopefully someone can get you turned in the right direction so you can retain the 181 and find the solution for fueling. I know Rob and Woody have both been instrumental in allowing the larger crank pulley crowed to make big gains.

Good luck
Jason

Have you tried Parts.com? I got my intake from them, it actually came from a MB dealer out of Illinois.

Same place I got mine. Before the pump is shipped you will need to supply a vin# from a SL55 AMG car.
